View Full Version : Brake drums
Well, I just got in from working on the truck. Took off the right side spring, tommorow I'll bring it down to the spring shop to get a new set built. My question tonight is does anyone know how to remove the brake drum from a closed knuckle 44? I've got to do a brake job while I'm in there. I've looked in the service manual and can't find any info on it. I don't have a Chiltons or Haynes manual. Do these manuals show it or is there an easy way? It looks like the whole hub assembly needs to come off.
Thanks

heck I did a hub removal out along side of the interstate one day. Pull the hub, loosen wheel bearing nuts, etc, and the hub and drum slide off. It took me about 1 1/2 hrs with precious few tools. I did the r&r because the tire shop hadn't torqued the wheel studs down which let everything get loose. I was towing the Jeep through about 20 mi of construction zone when it happened and the hub was about on fire when I stopped.I had to tear mine down past the backing plate and replace the spindle too. Luckily I had another Dana 44 sitting in the back of the tow vehicle. J20

All you need to do is slide the drum off after backing the adjusters off. Or if you have the 3/4 ton you need to unscrew 2 or 3 flathead screws between the wheel studs then the drum will slide off. If you want to take the hubs off it takes a big hex socket you can get at a auto parts store. If you get in that far repack your bearings and take the spindle off and pack the closed knuckle with grease and replace seals.
