View Full Version : Finding a new emergency brake cable...

So I went looking through the emergency brake cables on the Chero, something snapped and the pedal went to the floor when I tried to put the e-brake on (so for now it has chocks behind the wheels and I left it in gear). I yanked out a tattered end of the cable and shroud from the bottom, so I went to the cab and yanked out a likewise tattered and frayed remnant. I removed all of what remained, it looks somewhat simple and possibly universal, any possibility I could find something correct at a parts store? I have a decent selection of stores here; a few independant places, a CarQuest, the usual Autozone and Aid Auto, and a Jeep dealer I doubt I will go to. Should I check them out tomorrow, or just post in the wanted section?

I have always been able to find these at my local Advance Auto. They list several lenghts for the Wagoneer / Chero as well as short and long bed J trucks. They are pretty easy to replace and the ones that I have replaced haev been fully plastic shielded cables as opposed to the original corrugated metal shielding. The new ones seem to be a bit more weather resistant. I have the packaging at home somewhere so I could give you some part numbers if you can wait until this evening.

If it helps, the OEM number you need to replace is 5355721 aka J5355721. It was only used on 76-79 Jeep FSJ's with 3 speed manual transmissions. Windrock Offroad has one listed (5355721) on their website for $32.50. I don't know them and have never dealt with them.
Hope this helps,

If you have all the old parts and can't find anything over the counter a lot of times you can find a shop thats set up to make them from scratch. Machine shops, brake shops, sometimes places that make hydrualic hoses will be able to make cables to. Bust out the yellow pages and start making some phone calls. Prices should be comparable, sometimes cheaper. Quality will definatly be superior
