Engine starts, runs well but almost immediately , when put under load,. will shut down. Can restart but again shuts down. Appears to have plenty of fuel. Driving me up the wall. HELP.

Does it stall in neutral if you push the accelerator quick?

Can you drive it at all?

Does it stall if you ease it into Drive and accelerate slowly?

I'm assuming you have the stock Motorcraft 2bbl carb.

2 ez and cheap things to try. if you smell gas, take the aircleaner off and open the choke flap. hold the flap open with a wrench or something.with the exception of the 84 i had, my three wags took a bit to warmup, my vote is for a sticky choke linkage. try a can of choke spray .clickand clacks old universal answer "the choke pulloff" good luck.

Finally fixed problem. Found a bare pigtail yellow wire from the coil which was shorting out . Appears that this wire is used on other previous models but not on the 89. The insulation appears to have shrunk over time from heat . Apparently only when in gear and under load the vibration would cause it to short out. Thanks for the inputs.
