Will a 401 that was mated up to a 400 TH bolt up to a 727 tranny without an adapter?

Yes,if both trannies came from Jeeps, they both have AMC bolt patterns. You will need a flexplate from the 727.

Don't forget to pull out the thin metal spacer-insert thingy in the back of the crank before installing with a TF727.

You need a flexplate for a 74 Matador w/ 401. Thats the right flexplate for 401-727.
Don't forget to take out the crank ring monster. It's there, it's just hard to see.

And don't you also need to swap torque converters?

Don't know about the torque converter. I plan to put an after market converter in it when I swap though. Any suggestions here? The rig is an '84 j-10 that I use to pull my tent trailer with and hunt. Of course I wheel through the mountains and desert as well.
You need a TC for the 727.
