When we invaded Ouray in 2002, we meant invade... :D Heck, there was sumthin like 97 or 98 registered for that week.

Ralph Rogers was asking about some pictures of FSJs lined up in Ouray. I dug out the dusty CDs and found these. I don't think they have been posted on the web before.

Hey everbody... Yeah, good stuff huh?

The blue & black woodless GW belongs to Toby deMoss in the Denver area and member of CFSJA. It is an 87 with a 401 in it. That paint job is rattle can! He did a nice job on it and buffed it up good. :fsj:

The green J3000... I cain't remember the name of the owner...

Yes, that is Josh's Jtruck Janie!

It scares me to think how much oil was left on the trails that year!

So what is your preference for Ouray Invasion... 100 rigs or 15 rigs? What will happen for the 50 year anniversary of Jeep fullsize? Another massive invasion? Where did everyone stay?

For those of us who coordinated that mess (especially the very patient and calm mannered Michael Shimniok), we were all in shock by the time registration was done the first day. We were all burnt out at the end of the last day. It was fun, but somewhat stressful. That picnic gathering at Sunnyside Mine was Awesome tho Bro! We had a lot of folks at the KOA, Timberidge Campground, hotels in Ouray and Ridgeway, backcountry campers. We were everywhere!

I would say 15 is more fun because I can have personal experience with everyone. When you have 100, it is just crazy trying to keep up with everyone. Fun, but crazy! As for 50 year anniversary...that would be nice but i do not think you will see any of us old timers take that deal by the horns. At best I could act as an advisor based on my previous insane Ouray experiences.

Ditto what Flint said. We worked so hard for sooo long to organize the whole thing, then busted our asses the whole time to take care of everyone and all the activities. It was stressful and I honestly don't remember half of it just because we were all going going going! It was awesome! :D But I'm happy to hand the reins to anyone that wants to coordinate another event like that.

Man, talk about causes of global warming and ruining the enviroment. Must have been a temporary gas shortage in Ouray and Silverton after that picnic.
That's an eco-nazi's picketing dream there.

I like how the Ouray trip works out... is there any reason that everyone had to be checked in? I don't see any reason for any more organization than it has right now. I don't see a problem with having a 100 FSJ's there for the 50th anniversary and it working out the same as it has since '03. I agree with Flint, it is nice to spent time with everyone individually rather than scramble to just say "HI" to everyone. I really would enjoy the "sensory overload" though... that would be nice!

We had to do the registration because there we numerous things that were needed to tally and hand out. We had t-shirts and decals ands raffle stuff and gift bags...... all sorts of doodads.

That seems like a bit much. I can see why it isn't done anymore. I wonder if there will ever be a time when "got Ouray?" stickers will be given out... HMMMMMM? :D

Ok I must confess.....I have not and will not look at any pics from Ouray.

Didn't even scroll down thru this post.

I had planed on going back in 2002 for the invasion.....But we had to put a new roof on the house that same summer. So no money.

4 1/2 years later and I'm still bummed out.

Some day I'll make it. Maybe in 2012 for the 50th.

So I'd rather see it with my own eyes first time thanks you very much.

Babe, not to mention the mad run you made to the house in Dolly's POS Dodge to pick up the 2 spare QTs then change Phoebe's out on Sunday before we went home. And it started snowing on us! Whew...that was fun stuff! No wonder it was a blur. But the San Juan Mountain scenery was still there all in our faces.

For those of us who coordinated that mess (especially the very patient and calm mannered Michael Shimniok),

We were all burnt out at the end of the last day.

I think 10 years MIGHT be enough to partially forget the trauma... for some.

Having 100 rigs and 200 people was stressful and extreme stress for those planning for about 1 year leading up to the event as we were scrambling to get insurance, bbq put together, figuring out trail rides, raffle & sponsorship, dealing with payments and registrations, renting a room in town hall for registration, getting t-shirts, trophies, and all the other myriad logistics. :banghead:

That was probably harder than the actual event, and the event alone almost did us in. Without the brave and incredibly patient souls that helped out we would've been screwed (or they would've smacked me and left me on some mountaintop for being such a huge PITA to deal with). :o Then after the event, it was kind of a huge nightmare dealing with the finances, income taxes, sales tax, etc. I'm forever indebted to each of them.

The biggest problem with a big group is figuring out trail runs. The tendency is for everyone to want to do the same run. We were able to largely avoid that and divvy up trails every day. But even so there were dozens on a single trail and I can tell you that having 30 rigs on a trail is really difficult for everyone esp when there are inevitable vapor lock problems due to the altitude. Ideally you'd organize it like Easter Jeep Safari but cap the rigs at 10 per trail.

50th? I don't even want to think that far in the future (2012)... we'll play it by ear, I think... if somone wants to take it on, they'd be wise to take advantage of the old guard's experience to make the planning significantly easier.
