View Full Version : Should I switch to a narrow track rig

I primarily run my rig off road, It is a wide track. I have found it to be difficult at times to squeeze through rocks and trees without body damage. I am contemplating switching to a narrow track setup to gain a few inches. But I do love my widetrack. Any comments? Anybody have this same type of experience.

Are you looking to make your existing rig a Narrow Track or start all over on a 'new' truck?

I would have to start over. Probably keep the one I got and build another. Its more or less just a hypothetical. I got a n/t that is torn apart. but it is not nearly in good of shape as the "turdburglar" my widetrack.

That's my reason for planning to keep the n/t axles and use only 10.5" wide tires on my GW, I will be squeezing through tight spots, and I'm not going to lift it very high, so it makes sense to keep it narrow. If you've got a n/t in pieces, then you could put it back together with just the parts necessary to make it an offroader, hack the fenders, lift it only a little, and put on some tall skinny tires, then you've got an inexpensive off road beater, since it isn't in very good shape, it's no big loss if you seriously damage it offroad.

I was following an xj up a trail and I was scraping every rock and tree all the way up and I was creeping along.

I think you will find that a narrower truck may make a difference at first because you are now used to maneuvering a wider vehicle. After you become used to manuveuring a narrow track, your new confidence may be comprimised by squeezing into tighter places than before and eventually drag a rocker or ding a fender. I hated the first couple of dings and rock rash I put on my Jeep. It eventually settled into my brain that it was a Jeep and I was enjoying the off road experience and the collateral damage was a part of that activity.

I still can't believe that that rock didn't hit your window. The FSJ gods were looking down that day for sure!

God forgives, rocks don't.

Worst part was that was its first real trail ride. The only other time it had seen dirt was pullin a buddy out of the local mudhole.

Are you sure it's the axles that are the problem and not the width of the body? The axles account for maybe 5" of extra width. I run WT axles but I feel like the body width is the main issue. Maybe you should switch to a baby Jeep? :D

I am not a big fan of baby jeeps now that I have FSJ in my blood. You are right it is the body that is getting in the way. I know it is sacriligious (SP) but I might just trim my fenders off.

Why don't you complete the ultimate sacrifice, get a j-truck, and saw-zall the brow off while you're at it. :grumble:

Ya know, I've never seen a j-truck cab truck that wasn't all pretty. I mean a real beat up cab truck.

You could always have an EXO-Cage built and rub the cage on the rocks, trees, etc. But that ruins the look of our rigs.

Option 2 - go the chop top route, full cage and not worry about the rocks and trees.

Option 3 - sell your rig to me for $2.00 and not worry about the body damage :D :drivin:

Personally I would go the second option.

Good luck which ever way you go.

Time to dig out the saws-all, plasma cutter etc. It's Chop Top Time :sawzall: :dancingbanana:

I considered it but everything is fine except for that window and i alreadyreplaced it with one from Crazy Jeepman. It just needed a little help from the bottle jack. Also i just want to wheel it for a while but next time it rolls :sawzall:
