Did the Grand Wagoneer ever come with a factory issued tachometer? If so what years? Also wouls it be hard to after market one in the instrument panel?
Thanks, Evan

I don't think they ever came with a tach from the factory.

Putting one in the instrument panel may be a challenge. But aftermarket tacs attached to the dash or A-pillar can be easily installed.

I just put a sunpro aftermarket tach on mine, took less than an hour. Very easy to do.

Okay, get this... I bought a column-mount tach', wired it, sat in the Jeep and found the perfect position on the column to locate it, tightened it down, put away all of the tools, got in, started the Jeep, watched the tach working perfectly, put the shifter in "D"... and watched the tach rotate around with the column!!! I laughed my *ss off! So I left it in Drive, moved the tach to that great spot again, tightened it down and now, when I put it in Park, the tach is down to the left...

How do you wire the tach if you've done the TFI upgrade? I don't remember which wire is which. I have a Sunpro tach that I'm going to mount under the a/c ducting. Also, where's a good place to wire the tach light?

I wired the tach before I did the TFI... I remember (vaguely) keeping the wires because the tach needed'em... don't know where they'd be if I did the TFI first... they should be lurking near the distributor...

Should be the negative lead on the coil, whatever ignition you've got. Unless there is another provision for it somewhere.

TFI coils, at least the one I got, have an extra green lead for a tach. As for the light, I spliced into the wire that turns on the dashboard lights. It leads from the headlight switch to the cluster connector in the center of the instrument panel. I think it was the pink one, but that may be a lie. I'll look in the morning and let you know.

Evan,

Ok, I checked. For lighting the tach you want to splice into the white wire that comes out of the headlight switch on the side of the plug that is closest to the door (driver's door). The heavy (10 gauge) red wire enters the plug on this same side, as does a red w/white trace wire.

Evan,

Followup: I forgot to say that my information is for a '79 Wag; the headlight switch wires may be different for yours, but the principle is the same.
