I am thinking about new lights to replace the factory non-working ones. Not sure which I would like more - driving or fog. Wiring will be upgraded either way so that isn't a worry. Don't have a rack (other than factory) or a grille guard so I am looking to mount in the original mounts or fab something up.

What are your preferences? Pics of mounting?

Thanks.

Round lights on your bumper look fairly dumb, rectangle ones look better.

Although, you could do both. Rectangles on the front bumper for fog/driving lights, then some KC Slimlites mounted in the grille vent holes behind the grille.

round headlights on the factory mounts (which im guessing are on the black bumper things) would look pretty dumb, but my truck came with round lights mounted right on the bumper, inside of the black things and look decent. i dont think ill keep them on there though.

i actually havent come up with a good solution for getting fog/cruising lights on a fsj without it looking slightly out of place.

I prefer to have rectangle fog lamps that are amber colored, got a set for like $20 from Aid Auto, Aid and Autozone have the replacement lenses in case you break one. They're small and don't look silly, and they have a nice beam pattern. I chucked the original connectors and wires, and soldered everything with 14ga wire. I just had to drill the bumper to mount them. Fog lights with a wide beam are very critical in my view, sometimes the fog or snow can be just so thick that the only way to see is an amber light spread as low and far as possible. I also have some Hella lamps, they came on the Jeep, I think they're 550 series. I stuck 100 watt bulbs in them and soldered up 12ga wires and used a relay. They're for offroad and added nighttime vision so I can see deer better. My headlights are Sylvania silverstars, which have a wide low pattern on low beams, they help alot, but the amber foglights work best.

here's a pic of them

I like the look of round lights. I also like the Euro/Rally look of one of each, fog and driving.

I've also been known to like burnt toast, so do your own research.

Oh...I guess you are. :)

Just my humble opinion, but I always try to match the headlights. If theyre round I would go with roung fog lights. If the headlights are rectangular, then rectangular fog lights and/or driving lamps.:D

If you want to spend the bucks Hella makes one with a yaw sensor that turns on a cornering light when you go around a curve. It would double the value of my GW.

I like to match up the lens types. rectangle to retangle, round to round etc.

Although
I like rectangle for fog lamps

Both rectangle and round will push good long range lighting.
Rectangle will provide a broader range L/R of light and not quite as far out or long as a round light.
Round lights will push a longer light out front but can be narrower left to right.

But if you have enough lights it probably doesn't matter.

Here are 2 good lighting sources

Depends on your driving. You can use fogs with opposing traffic, you can't do that with driving lights. If you're out on long stretches of boonies like around here, and wanna make sure the dear and the antelope aren't playing in the middle of the road, definately need driving lights (or the combo eurobeams).

As for shape - I think rectangles look better on these rigs, round headlights or not (sorry for the weak photo of the rhino, I've got better ones at home)

Amber fogs look cool but even in heavy fog they don't do much good and when there is no fog they just sit idle. I had to put amber lenses on the XJ after one broke from a rock on the interstate and afterwards I really missded the long range they used to have with clear housings.

5 inch Warn floods on top of the bumper in my avatar, and wally world combo fog (amber) / driving (clear) fabbed into the face of said bumper.

the bigger ones look a little out of place without a brushguard.

Square with square and round with round. I like round so I changed from round to square:

funwheeling, you should get some 5.75" round buckets and trim, then get a pair of yellow headlights, and put 'em where the vent covers are s'posed to go.

i think that'd look real nice.

Ristow-

Do you find the small ones are more like a driving light or more like a fog? I was looking at some very similar to those.

Did you try to mount your Hella's on the posts to see how they would look or did they look too big?

Funwheeling-

Are you using your factory posts for the Hella's or did you have to fab something up?

Decisions, decisions...

anyone have lights installed under their grille (razor/muscle) where the faux vent covers go?
do they work alright?

I wouldn't see why it'd be any different than with a Rhino. Maybe a slight loss of light, but people mount offroad lights behind their grille all the time.

I'm working on some custom covers that will match its name. We sell 3D printers where I work.

It really depends on you and what you are trying to do. See further down the highway at 70 mph, or see up close when you are crawling through rain and fog.
If fog is a concern, get a set of H4 headlights. In fact, if lighting is important, get a set of H4 headlights - see my website for why I'm such a proponent of them.

I went with round - might have a picture somewhere - I'll look and post later if I can find it. Looked better than I expected, but I got them because they were small, thin, and had a lot of light (lumens) for the stock wattage (55w).

The wiring for the stock fog lights are off of the low beam circuit. If you switch to driving lights, you should rewire so they work in conjunction with your high beams.

there are both driving and fog bulbs available.i have the spot bulbs in now.i relay'd them to click on with the high beams, the help fill in the spot between the truck and the beams hittting the road up ahead.not real bright but they help.

the big ones looked about as good on the factory mounts, but they rested on the bumper pads, and wouldn't quite aim low enough.those are fogs too,but they're really bright.

Why not keep the driving lights/head lights and add fog lights...I didnt catch your year of make, but this is a 77 Chero that fog lights were added, remember fog lights are to be seen and not to actualy see with...here is what I have inset behind the grill...

Square driving/off road lights same size as OEM. Wallmart has/had Fox Baja lights on sale for 20 bucks. Don't know how they do it. Fox is a name brand and sponsers Baja racers. Mine are almost exactly OEM size, and I have them hooked up with origional wiring and no problems. These really throw a good, bright light. Stone guard grid with black covers that say Baja. I might rattle can em for an even more OEM look. I have them on the OEM brush guard fog light tabs. I like the OEM look on the outside. No use for fog lights, need desert lights.

Next is some better mains, but I'll need a relay.

Personally, I like square lights - except with rhino, where I'd put the fogs in where the 'pie-plates' go. I'm a fan of LED's; and my Jeep will probably have a lot of them. lol -- they're spendy, but only spendy ONCE. :D
