I just got my 83 chero back from cottman. Before the repair the tranny would'nt downshift from 3rd to 2nd. They replaced 2ng gear, the synchros and a shift fork. The tranny is back in and shifting ok but my question is how smooth do these trannies normally shift. It is slightly difficult shifting from one gear to the next. I am not used to this particular tranny as my other chero was an auto and for all I know this could be the norm. I'm guessing these did'nt shift as easily as the newer vehicles I'm used to driving. I believe its a t176 4spd manual w/ np 208. I have to take it back beacuse it looks as though the tranny or t case is leaking which wasn't happening before I had it repaired. Any info about the tranny would be helpful before I take it back. Thanks

It wont shift as smooth as a newer car stick does. My T18a kinda "clicks" into gear...you can physically hear it clickk in when i move it. Eevery truck tranny i have driven has required a tab bit of force to go into gear, with the exception of the NV4500 that i drove in a cummins dodge, thats a smooth tranny.

The T176 shifts lots smoother than a T18 and has a shorter distance of travel between gears. But it's still not like a car tranny though it should not be "difficult". Make sure the oil is topped off. It will not shift as smoot when low on oil since the shifter assembly sits on the very top.
Interesting my 2nd gear sychros wore out too.
