i'm in the process of overhauling my 67 j-3000 for it's 40th birthday and thought i'd share some pics and specs from my mad thrash build that will hopefully be finished in time for the easter jeep safari. the plan is to completely gut the truck to the frame and body and update the drivetrain with donor parts from my dearly departed 79 waggy which i rolled on its 3rd trip out after a like build up.:banghead: so i've got to merge the 2 into one so they can both live on. here are the only digital pics i,ve got so far. waggy part way through build and the parts i'll be using and the j-truck as it is now before build.

Think you could shrink those pics down a bit...they're huge!

And some people accuse Americans of having an iron(y) deficiency!
The pics look good, but if you could upload some bigger ones, that would be nice.

every time i tried to load the pics it wanted me to make them smaller:( and this is what i ended up with i much more adept with a wrench than this darn computer. i'll try to get some outside help and see what i can do about the size. note the tiny designation of the pics they went through small, smaller , smaller still and a couple more resizings till i finally ended up at tiny

BMP files do not compact very well and usually creat much larger file size. Use your image editor to save them as JPG files. They are much more compact than BMP.

You could also try to save them as a PDF.

That makes them a bit of a pain to open, however.

thanks for the suggestions on the pics i think with all the help i can figure it out. as for my build its going well so far. the gutting is finished, and i'm starting to fit the new parts in thier new homes its a little tougher than i thought. i assumed most of my waggy parts would be direct fits:rolleyes: not the case but after 2 nights i was able to fit the radiator, and weld in the motor mounts. the next night i built a new mount and cross member for the tranny and tonight i chopped off the front axle and suspention and will start fitting the front springs and dana 60 tomorrow. i have taken alot of pics with my camera phone which are easier to post but its hard to tell whats going on in them.

Cool pics, Darwin. I like the pto winch and the lights in front vent holes, what brand/kind of lights are they, they look like a perfect fit.

thanks! i'm not the one that put those lights in but they are pretty cool. i think the guy used headlight buckets out of an old chevy but the lights themselves are 100 watt aircraft landing lights they are super bright and illegal here in utah so i don't think they can stay. the pto winch is for sale i decided to use an electric winch on this build.

Well, if you do ever decide to get rid of the vent hole lights, Id be interested in em and all that is needed to mount em up (for off road use of coarse, haha)

Where do you have the pto winch for sale and what are you asking for it?

Total Est. Distance: 682.60 miles
from me LOl I probably couldn't afford it but it would be interesting to see what you are asking for it. Do you have it posted at Rockymountainextreme.com? Found it not a bad price either

$200 is a decent price since you have the drive for it. Are you keeping the Dana 20 in your drive train? If so I would consider keeping it myself. PTO winches have been covered a number of times here and on the pirate web site. Unlike an electric it must have the engine running obviously I have heard that they can be converted to Hydraulic although I have never seen it done.

i'm not using the dana 20 on this truck so i couldn't keep the winch, but i did think about using it on my flat fender. i'm not sure if the take off unit would work on the dana 18 though? i never thought an old pto winch would be so popular though.

I know for a fact that the PTO won't fit your D18. I do know it will fit my D20 and the winch and bumper would look good on my J2000 (haha). I PMed you again.

my computer crashed lately and its givin me alot of time to spend workin on my truck. finally got both the axles on :) but the lift height ended up being alot higher than anticipated :( i had planned on running 37's but with as high as it sits now the 40's fit alot better.

Looking good! Over on Pirate some guy asked how do others keep themselves motivated to get their projects done one guy told him to shut off the computer and get out ion the garage and get to work! I am afraid I have to agree i spend way to much time on this thing than I do over at Bart's working on the rig.

update on the build. with my march 30th deadline getting closer and closer. my jeep is coming along rather well. i have finished the suspension, brakes, and steering. built a new front driveline and hope to see the rear driveline in the morning, i didn't dare build that one my self. got a front bumper and winch installed, and left the part i'm looking forward to the least until last. the wiring. i've ordered a ron francis wiring harness for it that should be here in the next couple days leaving me about a week to wire it. keeping my fingers crossed!! i'd hate to leave this truck home for easter:eek:

I hate wiring up thing too and wiring a truck will be so fun (haha)! I have never heard of that brand of wiring harnesses. Do they make them for FSJs or is it one you have to modify to make it work? How much lift did you end up with, because that thing looks great.

yeah the wiring isn't much fun. the harness is for a chevy truck and should fit pretty easily:rolleyes: they assemble it according to what parts your running so some of it should just plug in like the alternator and steering column. i will post up how it works out and hopefully a week is enough time to do it. the lift only ended up being about 6 inches with wagoneer springs in front with spring over and chevys in the rear spring over also

well its the 30th and my truck is not done:banghead: . looks like i'll be wheelin moab in the wrangler this week. the truck is running all the wiring is finished other than the stereo. the ron francis wiring harness kicks butt !! and i'd recomend it to anyone. the hold up on completion was the guys at safelite auto glass not producing a windshield in time, and hense no registration. so driving it down is not an option. pretty cool to have it mostly done any way. i will post up some pics when i return from easter jeep safari and back it outta the garage.

well i gave it hell to get it done in time for the moab trip but no luck  i bought a cheaper version of an hei distributor to make the wiring go more smoothly and be more reliable in the long run. after running the truck up to operating temp and setting the timing the new distributor completely chewed the drive gear off the cam :banghead: so now i'm looking at tearing down the motor to clean up the mess and install a new cam. and this engine was competely rebuilt less than 1,000 miles ago. it seems i'm wasting more money on this build than acctually helps complete it. since i've had so much trouble i decided to take a break and spent the last 3 weekends in moab. fun and stess relieving but it shoulda been in the j truck. always looking on the bright side though i may be getting a new waggy with a rebuilt 401 and just swap motors. i'll find out for sure in the morning. wish me luck :)

If you can get the 401 do it. I got mine and love it. It would be well worth the swap instead of tearing down and building back your present motor only to still want the 401.
Give me a pm when you get a chance.
Thanks,
Rankin

Did you use a matched set of cam gear and distributor drive gear? If not, this is what happens.
DARWIN
04-23-2007, 11:39 PM
well i didn't get the 401 so its tearing down the 360. as far as the gears they should have been a match from the start as far as i know. all the amc displacements share the same basic distributor so i lubed it up and installed it. if there is something i don't know i'd like to learn something from this so it doesn't seem like a complete waste. i'm open to any kind of constructive critisism.

on a side note can you get a flex plate for the 401 that will mate it to a 727? and would a 390 out of a 69 amx be a cool alternative or no?
