View Full Version : Need to prove it was factory

I got my inspection sticker today, and the guy running the garage said that I might have some problems with the Camper Truck tire carrier I installed. I guess Massachusetts doesn't like things sticking past a vehicles body. I was able to convince him it was factory, but he suggested that I carry something proving it was a factory option in my glove box in case the police aren't so believing. I have a few pics of it in some brochures, and the installation diagram, but don't have anything that mentions it as an option.
Does anyone out there have something that lists the outside tire carrier as optional equipment that they could scan for me?
Thanks.

I haven't found any FSJ stuff, but perhaps these can prove that Jeep liked to mount spare tires in that spot.

Yeah, Jeep has always liked to hang spare tires from the sides of their products. I think Earl&Mary have some camper truck brochures. I'm hoping that they might have one that lists it as an option. I probably won't ever have a problem, but with my luck....I'd rather be safe then sorry.

Thanks. The tire carrier doesn't show up as optional. I guess the police will have to settle for the factory pics if they have an issue with it. I don't think they will, but the state troopers around here are real you know whats.

Not exactly what I was thinking:rolleyes:
There is a State Police barracks in the next town over. They have a lot of rookies that will bag anyone for anything, and generally care more about writing tickets then helping people.

I got pulled over by the NYS Police awhile back because they didn't like my glaspack:huh: The trooper kept insiting if it wasn't factory it was illegal. I was going to ask if my lift& wide tires were legal but I didn't want another ticket...I think if they see a nice old grandpa looking truck(no offense) with the tire like that they won't think much of it, plus having a couple pictures of the brochure wouldn't hurt either.
On a side note, was there any factory (dual) exhaust package for '79? I just don't want another ticket :banghead:

I don't think Jeep ever offered dual exhaust on any of their vehicles. At least I've never seen a factory duel set up.
Good idea about not mentioning the lift. I know in Mass we have a law that determines how much each vehicle model can be lifted based on several factors (one is stock tire height) I've never worked it out for my truck, but my cousins TJ is 4+ inches over the limit.

Thomas:
I looked through all my brochures and could not find it listed as an option. There is a Spare Wheel Lock that is an option for all models but no picture of it.
What I did notice is that the only trucks with exterior spares are the 132" wheelbase 8,000 GVW Camper Specials. There are no other pickups in the brochures with the Townside box and an exterior spare even if it has a camper on it. But you gotta hope that if the officer notices that then he is an FSJ fan and just pulled you over to admire your truck!

Is Massachusetts a socialist state? What gives?
A few weeks back a cable cartoon network had a publicity campaign that used little pixelized images of their cartoon characteron a device that looked a lot like a Lite Brite. (remember those?) They were places at numerous locations in 9 major cities including New York, Atlanta, and in Massachusetts, Boston.
No other city had any calls, there were no incidents, but in Boston they are so paranoid that they panicked and shut portions of the city down, then used the bomb squad to "detonate" the "Lite Brites." After threats of lawsuits by the City of Boston, the cable company is paying 2 million bucks to cover the cost of idiots in charge. Here's a picture of the device:

Socialist? Well on their way. Idiots? Already there. If you've ever heard Mayor Menino speak, you would wonder that if he is the cream of the crop, is the entire city mentally handicapped? He cannot put a sentence together either properly or intelligibly. Next to him George W. Bush looks like Bill Clinton (not politically, but in areas of eloquence and slickness.)

What's with Mass? I can't believe a cop would harrass you for a spare tire carrier like that. I don't think that would stick out any further than a pair of West coast-style mirrors.
Well, anyway, the Camper Specials had that spare tire mount as a factory or dealer option.

Did they ever offer any exhaust package at all? I just don't want to get a ticket...May end up photo-chopping a factory brochure, print it and leave it in the glove-box if it comes down to that:rolleyes:

If they don't like things sticking out past the body, why do they allow mirrors?

I have a 1972 J4800 Camper Special with the 4 mounting holes in the side of the box on the passenger side that have snap in plugs in them so were predrilled or punched for a optional spare tire carrier which I never acquired since I figured the sheet metal would crack from the weight of the tire and wheel. I installed two tire carriers on the back of the box behind the wheel wells which worked fine for me.

If you look at the illustration I posted from the parts catalog, there is a plate that goes on the inside of the bed to prevent this.

Have any of you ever seen the clips on "Worlds wildest police videos" where the officer talking to a motorist on the side of the road gets his butt swipped by someone who was driving too close to the edge of the road. The thing here is a side view mirror at 55 mph will crack a rib or two but a tire bolted solid to the side of the truck will definitely mangle you and carry you a couple yards.
Same reason why you shouldn't carry 20 ft pieces of lumber sticking out of the window of your geo metro.
If it's a factory option and you like it there, then you should be allowed to have it there, but also think of the consequences it may have.
What would happen if you were driving around a corner and just caught a corner of a mailbox at 30MPH. Your mirror would fold over or maybe break, but your spare, it would definitely stop you short (til something gives) jolt you in the cab, the bedside would most likely kink or dent, and if you're lucky you wont tear the mailbox off it's mounts, but that's another can of worms.
Ask yourself "What If?"

That's what I'm going to use. I just made a copy of the print out I had.
I was just hoping for something that actualy listed in as a Jeep option. This should work fine though.

Right. The exterior mounts where only for the camper trucks. Though if you notice in several brochures they are clearly mounted on 132" wb 5-LUG trucks, which also have large campers mounted. Not sure what this model is. AFAIK all 3407Z Camper Trucks had 8 lug axles.

AMCX75MATADOR-I think Jeep took that into consideration when they designed the new Gladiator due to the recessed area of the bed side where the spare goes.
