I am going to look at a 65 J-200 this weekend. It has the 230 OHC engine. Owner said it says all wheel drive, rather than four wheel drive. I thought he said it was manual trans, but I'm not sure.

Also said that it used to be an army truck, and that some of the military lights/wiring is still there.

What transfer case might this have in it?

Were there any CUCV type vehicles in that era?

Any other info of what it might have in it would be appreciated.

Sure its not an M715 or hybrid J/M715? 200 TC was stock, I think, in M715's.

You'll have to check it out to find out about the wiring. There were no 'military' J-trucks from that era AFAIK, though it could be a civilian model used by some gov't agency. The M715s came a few years later.

Look in the tech info for the drivetrain database: http://www.ifsja.org/tech/figures/db.html

It's not all wheel drive, it's four wheel drive. It probably has drive flanges (meaning the front is locked in all the time), butit will still have a 2WD function.

Tranny could be a column shift T90 (or T86, I can never remember) 3 speed, or a floor shift T98A 4-speed.
It will have the Dana 20 two speed case.

AFAIK Jeep never supplied civi type J-series vehicles to the military, but I'm sure a few ended up in its service.

The Jeep will have the Ross style steering gear. Outdated to say the least. A popular swap is the modern style Saginaw steering gear. It will have a closed knuckle D44 front with drum brakes, and either a Dana 44 or Dana 53 rear with 2-peice axle shafts.

He said the emblems on it say "all wheel drive" instead of four wheel drive. I was wondering if the single speed D-21 come in these or only wagoneers.

I had a 62 utility wagon years ago, would the steering you refer to be the same type that the wagon had?

Yes, I do believe that the earlier wagons used the Ross steering system.

The Dana 21 only came in Wagoneer’s, and only behind the AS-8F auto.
Jeep never used an "All-Wheel Drive" emblem on their J-Series trucks, so that doesn't belong there. It is normal 4-wheel drive, with 2wd, 4-hi and 4-lo.

Thanks for the info everyone, I can't wait to check it out. I'll try to get a few pics and post them after I look at it.

That owner needs some glasses. I know the "4" can sometimes look like an "A", and maybe he's blending the "W" and "ll" together:D :D :D :D .

The trucks never came with a spicer 21, only the wags. You will have a spicer 20, and if you are lucky, you will have the T98 4 spd.

An army spec'd truck is certainly possible, but these are not the M715's.
I've come across a '66 Wagoneer that was originally used by the Military as base transportation. It looked like any other civvy rig except for the brass nomenclature plate on the dash and the dark green paint. It was also bare bones on the inside.

Here's a tip for the Tornado 230. The civvy ones use a front plate for the engine mounts. the later M715 230's have the mounts on the block.

In all my years of Jeep collecting, it's amazing how often the term "military" is used in for sale descriptions. People see heavy duty or "utilitarian" features and automatically think it must be military.

When I was looking at my 2WD J200, the owner insisited that the rear axle was out of a "military" truck - when all it is is a Dana 44 with a power lock diff; exactly what it rolled off the assembly line with, just like almost every other J-truck of the era.

Keep us posted after you look at this truck - sounds like it could be intersting!

I took a look at this J-200 this weekend. Body was relatively straight, but with a good bit of rust through in the bottom of the cab, floorboards, just above the rain gutters and bed/box. It looked like a regular J truck to me but the owner said it was formely an Air Force truck. May have been used on a air base or something. It did have some Motorola gizmo under the hood, but couldn't tell what it was.

It was a 3 speed column shift. Looked like D-44 F&R, with two piece axles on the rear. Tag in the door said 5000 gvw. Owner said it has 6.17 gears, but I would bet something like 4.27 more likely. Here are some camera phone pics I took.

Thriftside, cool... does it have the rear bumper and tailgate?

It has a big custom bumper on the back, with long horizontol taillights mounted in it. It doesn't have a tailgate.

****! These thriftsides sure seem to be coming out of the woodwork lately, or the woods, that is.:)

Don't feel bad about the rusted floors. They all seem to be that way and patch panels are available.

It kinda looks like it was parkway green before they camo'ed it.
