In the last two years this is the 3rd 401 I've snagged from Travelalls. In the same two years I have not found any 401's in Jeeps or AMC's. It would be interesting to find out how many of the 401's we sold to IH?

This one was in a 74 1010 Travelall, really nice body on the rig, no rust straight as an arrow, never been molested. When I looked at it I thought maybe the engine was fried as I could not see any other reason why the car was in a wrecking yard. We checked the fluids, stuck a good battery in it, hot wired it (no key), sprayed her with starting fluid and she fired right up. Ran the engine for about 60 seconds, no knocking, no smoke, purred like a kitten. Nogotiated the price and a hour later the engine was sitting in back of my truck!

Sweet, there was a 58 travall on Ebay a while back it needed work but for a truck that old it was in darn good shape.
Which place did you find that if you don't mind saying?

I dont think the 401 ever came in a 4x4 Travelall. That 727 behind the 401 and those exhaust manifolds are worth $$$

Hate to see a what appears to be a restorable cornbinder like that get robbed of her engine. Yeah I must admit, I see beauty in ugly! Speaking of kinda ugly, I guess it ain't so bad if a FSJ is the recipient. Nice score!

I would pimp it. She looks clean. To clean to steal her heart for a transplant. I guess they did not want much for it since you mentioned seeing the price. I would have picked up the whole rig. It saddens me to see this happen.

Why?

Full size AMC cars used 727's and the exhaust manifolds look like standard AMC issue units.

I guess on the tranny, maybe IH didn't use that silly Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogleyed TV linkage and kick down linkage?

No the 2wd 727's had the larger and stronger 4 gear planetary. (Or so I have been told) No personal experience but I just pulled a 727 and 401 out of a travelall. The Grand waggys have a 3 gear planetary.

401 exhaust manifolds have the larger 2.25 output. They share the same casting # as all the others however they are larger and are sought after.

Hard to say from this pic. Travelall's came in 2 flavors of 1/2 ton and also a 3/4 ton. Some were 2WD with solid front axles and some were IFS. I don't think they used 401's till 72-73ish, supposedly because the 392's were in short supply then.

I'm more into the early 80's and 800's, but I'd rock that thing for sure.

How'd you tell?

4WD Cornbinders built in the early 70's were much higher off the ground than this thing is.
I grew up with a 72 and later a 73 pickup. Besides, no hubcap like those will cover the hubs. ;)

the AMC 401 was available in (and only in) 74 IH P/u and Travalall's tho IH sold them as 400's and are listed as 400's in junkyard bibles, tho they came with the AMC 360 2bbl intake manifold per the bible
and those are AMC exhaust manifolds too

Which place did you find that if you don't mind saying?

Bigun,

I found it at Acme Towing on Broadway. He has 160 cars he is selling. I went to look at 4 AMC's he had but found the 401 and couldn't resist.

Heres his site w/pics and prices:

http://acmeaa.com/

Just click on the "Gold 1-160" tabs.

He told me what he doesn't sell by March 15th he will either crush or sell them to the U-Pull it yard.

I did take the exaust maniflods but not the transmission. MC also advised me a couple of years ago to grab the alternator bracket and dip stick tubes from these rigs. Much better pieces than what came on our Jeep rigs. Thanks MC!!! My Javelin 401 also has a IH motor in it. I did put the IH transmission in it. Had to change the tailshaft and good to go. This 401 is going in my Waggy, her 360 is real tired and my baby deserves a new engine.

I don't feel guilty at all taking back our 401's from IH trucks. There is absolutly no market for the Travelalls. Around here they all get crushed wether they have an engine in them or not. If you guys think she is worth saving give him a call and offer him $200 for the rig. Thats what he will be trying to get from the U-Pull It yard come March.

Happy Wheeling,
Doug

Thanks, The reason I asked is there is what looks like an early 60s F100 right behind it!!

I own a 70 travelall, while it is underpowered [345] hard to stop [drums all around] weigh 6380 lbs with 9 gallons of gas. It is a 4x4 i have to say that it is a very easy truck to work on, the parts are getting more plentiful out there, it is a very realiable truck.and you can take anything you want with you cause of the size.

Charlie,

Most had some damage, some minor, some major, some also had rust problems. He's not selling them very fast, I believe most could be bought well under the asking price.
He does insist that you call first for an appointment.
His name is Eddie Ray, pretty nice guy also.

I love this site. Stuff I find here is always timely and informative. This afternoon I went parts hunting at local yard. I needed a 401 harmonic balancer. Mixed with the Jeeps was a lone IH 4x4 truck. Hood was open and walking by I did a double take. AMC V8 between the fender wells. Fingering under the ex. manifold confirmed, 401 v8. And ID tag did say 400 according to a IH guy that came by. He never heard of a AMC in an IH. Had 2 bbl. carb., emission manifolds and auto trans. Just as earlier post stated. And it's a '74. What transfer case is with this package? D300 I might have to go back. 727 and A300 would be a good score. My wife doesn't like the T18 in my Willys.

I have never found a 401 in a 4x4 Binder. I can't tell you much about the transfer case.
Let us know what happens with the engine.

LOL That's a first for me. I'd heard about them. It's forecast for bad weather the next few days here. I'll have to find out about the T.C. before going back. I've been on Pirate 4x4 asking. Binder Bulliten isn't loading or I'd try there also. later :drivin:

Italian tractor manufacturer makes a car , result a Lamboghini

American tractor manufacturer makes a car , result a Travelall ... I didnt know they existed and I still wish I lived in ignorant bliss

That is one of the UGLIEST vehicles I've ever seen . Maybe the designer defected to the US from Russia after designing the Trabant or one of the other Russian design abortions ? Could be a cool thing for cruising in the Ukraine with scantily clad 300lb girls from the tractor factory hanging out the windows displaying their hairy armpits

Sorry guys , its a parts car , it has the eye appeal of a shopping trolley , put the 401 in a Jeep

Tim,
No, my neighbor has the one from Cortez. This one I snagged from an IH Travelall in Albuquerque.
The Cortez motor (401) has been transplanted into a J-truck, and the doner Chero had a 360 stabbed into it and was recently sold to a fellow in Belen.

DougThe passenger side exhaust manifold with the heat shield looks like a typical Jeep 401 exhaust manifold to me. I have seen 360 engines with the same manifold too. I have had 9 401 engines, but am down to 6 right now. They are not that rare in this area.

That is a slick move. We were sad to hear that 401 left the area. If we had not picked up the J20, we may have stepped up for that package. Cain't gitem all...
