I just bought a 1976 Wagoneer for $200. The only thing I know that's wrong with it is the tranny/QT. I got my great running 1980 Cherokee for $800, with factory winch. Let me hear some cheeeep FSJ stories!!

I paid $850 for mine 2 years ago. I watched it for quite some time before I actually made an offer. The starting price on the for sale sign was $1800. Waving cash in front of someone seems to work really well. I am sure we both think we got the better end of the deal. smile.gif

You want a cheap story? Sorry, I don't have one. Paid $3,600 for the starter Jeep and have added another $7,100 in repairs and upgrades. That makes $10,700 total and worth every penny of it! smile.gif

I bought mine for $750, and have sunk in close to another 2 g's since. It has been a riot every minute.

I paid $1 for it and drove it home. The next day i was driving her around and threw a rod. I have put about 5 grand into her and counting.... but it is worth every penny IMHO. Remember a jeep is just a metal box in which you throw money into :D

1 grand J20 came with d44/d60/d20 360
diamond plate tool box (ooooh shiny) diamond plate bedrails (ooooh more shiny) and diamond plate floorboards bathroom siliconed face down to cover the rust holes.
he said it didnt shift in to 4x4 (three inches of carpet prevented moving the shift lever) power steering didnt work (tightened hoses added fluid) and the "head" leaks oil (replaced the 30year old vave cover and intake gaskets)
now i just want to lift it and drive it across the country towing my CJ

$2,100 Canadian- safetied- in fall of 2,000. Almost everything worked, except the compass thingie and rear defrost. Took a new m/c and rear shoes. I'll have to put some emissions equipment back on, as my smog test is coming up and a few of the bits have rusted away.

The GW is not as much fun as my Series Land Rover, nor as good off road, but was still a great consumer choice, IMHO!

OK, just kidding, it was $650 and ran, just couldn't stop. Looked for 6 months to find one with the 350/400/20 setup.
Gotta admit I like it better than the house I paid 90K for though. ;)

I paid $1200 for my 78' Cherokee. I didn't get a very good deal. In hind sight I should've given closer to $500. But all the fluids squirting out and parts falling off gave me the determination not to be beat! :D

PO wanted $3500 but offered him $2800 we settled on $2900.Only 99k miles when I got her and no rust(must have lived in the southwest).Hasn't taken a lot(radiator, carb, fuel pump, starter, tires and the misc hoses, filters, new radio). When I got her only 8mpg but with what I've done(with a lot of ideas from the good people here)has gotten me to 13mpg.Don't see many for sale around here, but you do see a lot on the road.

I'd love to have a 'bargain' story, but I paid more than I should have ($1,700). There's almost no rust, but the previous owner did some screwy maintenance.

I bought my parts Chero for $500, but it had 15x10's and 32" tires in pretty good shape. I'm holding onto it for the drivertrain (or another project if the mood hits).

I look at the Jeep like any investment though. It's only a loss if I sell it for less than I paid. Since I don't plan to sell it, it'll never be a loss. :D

Yikes! I think I paid the most for the '89 - $4k. It had 52k miles and was in real nice shape. Haven't done anything other than TFI and general maintenance. Made up for it with the price on the next Wag, $600 for the '65. (I gave the PO $100 more than he wanted in exchange for a new poly gas tank and new warn hubs - installed).

I bought my 79 J10 for $750. Probably too much, but it's hard to pass up a shortbox J10 with factory roll bar and sitting on 33x12.5 tires. I plan on getting it in respectable shape, SOA, repaint to match original Honcho decals. Maybe go to Colorado in August if all of the mods get done.

$350. The only real problem is the rusty body and damage that I have done. A set of tires and some sheet metal in the floor and I had it on the road. I still need a cat and an e,ergency break cable to be 100% street legal in NC though. :(

I can't remember exactly, but I paid around 1200-1500 for mine. I've put about 7500 in it since and will be spending more yet. But when I'm done it will be brand new ( except for the body ) and just what I want. Plus no computers, plastic, air bags, emissions tests, or anything else.

Paid $1000 to a guy in Portland, OR - 80 wagoneer with 60k miles on it, but hadn't been driven much in ~ 5 years...drove it all the back to the SF Bay area in CA that day (well next 2 days) with an extremly leaking radiator and a pretty mean oil leak that dripped onto the hot exhaust  - stopping for gas was pretty exciting...

Have since replaced the radiator, fixed the oil leak, new carb, new water pump, new fuel pump, new exhaust, and just had the tranny rebuilt...have added TFI and a Rhino grille...probably about an additional $2k into it so far - but runs awesome, with plans for another $2k soon....

tons of fun to work on...

I got my J20 a J10 and another J10 for parts all for $450. I later sold the J10 for $700 and parted out the other one and used many parts to fix my J20. Awesome deal I think, considering J20's are pretty tough to find around here. And it has a huge flatbed on it thats probably worth more than I paid for them all.

I got my 83 Wag limited for 3000.
It had 113,000 original miles on it.
It is near perfect condition.
Everything works except the rear defroster and my backup lights. I keep blowing the fuse for the back up lights..must be a wire touching somewhere. The only Thing i've done to the wag is change the oil and replace the fan belts. I hope to soon have pics for it.

I paid $2000 to a guy in Atlanta, not a great deal. It had 87,000 original miles, a leaky window and a little rust (not full blown by any means). So far I have done general maintenance and working on the rust thing.. Since it was "just work transportation" (what I told my wife so she wouldn't see the project coming), and I enjoy waking up the neighborhood every morning at 5:00 am, I love it. :D

Free!

Mother-in-law gave it to me.

Of course, the brakes were bad,the shocks were original and the gas tank leaked. (Hmmmmmm)

Since then it has been a small fortune. (Part of that is because I didn't know about THIS site).

gas tank
shocks
head liner
tranny
carb
radiator
water pump
fuel pump
alternator
ps pump
brakes
rear window fix
tinting the windows (okay this is an upgrade not a fix)
air conditioning (very expensive but worth it in AZ)
tires (taken from my wifes jeep)
hoses and belts (of course)
battery
car alarm w/ auto unlock doors (UPGRADE! SWEET!)

So my free ride ain't free no more! If it stays together for a while then I can do a suspension lift and maybe a body lift too!

$250 for my first 79 waggie. Body was about usual, motor ran good, had a tranny leak. Sunk about 4k into it, then got in a really bad wreck (rollover, their fault), got about 6k from the insurance and got to keep all the parts.

Then, with the new money, went to FSJ #2...

$500 for a 77 Chero. Mint interior, exterior rusty, full drivetrain but inoperative. Swapped in all the good parts from the waggie. Put about 1k into it, but just to rusty to restore. Parted it out for about $800, keeping all the new stuff once again.

Then, with the new money, went to FSJ #3...

$150 for a 79 Chero WT, no drivetrain and more or less no interior. But I had all the engine parts from Jeep #1, and the interior from Jeep #2. Absolutely no rust except the drivers side floor boards (easy enough). Even the WT flares had no rust at all! I've put about 3.5k in it so far.

Also a few parts Jeeps for 100 here, 150 there, etc.

Paid $700 for mine 7 and a half years ago and have put God-knows-how-much into it since. The body was shot but the drivetrain had only 47k on it and $500 in new brakes and brake lines. The reason I got it for $700 (he was asking $1500) was that it would not go into gear. Had the original low range cable that had snapped and left the QT in neutral. Pulled the truck out of this guys garage with my friend's CJ, crawled underneath, and popped the QT into 4H. The guy about $h!t when he saw me climb in and drive away!

I got my J20 for 2 payments of 250.00. PO said it was stalling on him and ran crappy. It was ugly beat up and used, and he drove it in. 4 sparkplugs later after replacing the fuel pump he took, it ran like a champ, and still does. It had a rough 2 PO's. Was bone stock with white and brown paint, and a BUNCH of crap in the back. Ive put around 700 into it so far, and worth it! It seems to pay me back by running like a champ and giving me not to challenging problems(after I get advice from here of course, then its easy)

I paid $600 for mine and it had been converted to a Chev motor (it was done right also!). It is a great running fuel-injected Chev 350. It was cheap because the transmission was bad. I drove it home and plugged the vacuum line into the modluator and it worked great until I decided to replace it with a 700r4.

Then I decided I didn't like pink carpet and the tan, copper and brown color and it kind of snowballed from there. No I won't say how much I've put into her since then!

1979 Cherokee wide track #2 Cost 2500 dollars, bought about 11 years ago, but was rust free (from Texas!) and complete!!
1979 Cherokee wide track #3 Was bought for $300 bucks, and was so rusty, the entire side from the front wheel to the tailgate was not attached to the floor, or at least where the floor used to be. :D It was purchased for the drivetrain to put into ....
1985 J10. Picked up in Tennessee. No emissions left on it. But, once again, a solid body, no rust, and good tranny, transfer case. Set me back 1800 bucks about 3 and a half years ago. ;) ;)
How much I have spent on them outside of this, I don't want to know. The bigger question is how much more do I need to spend on them to get them where I want them?

'91 Wag: too much at $4500, but oh well

'78 Chero: $1700, put about twice that into her before I sold it for $800 (OUCH!)

'79 Chero: FREE--it was at a downtown tranny shop where it had been sitting for over a year. The owner was a guest of the State of Alabama (incarcerated) and bums had been sleeping in it. The shop owner even called the tow truck for me!

'86 Wag: also FREE--a military friend of mine was transferred to Osan and gave me the truck. I drove it for two weeks and the tranny went kerblooey.

To show you what an idiot I am, I sold the '79 and the '86 to a Jeep yard for $800 combined. I needed the cash and I was moving...c'est la vie. What I couldn't do with those now!

Thanks! I've been envying your Chero for some time. smile.gif The PO wrecked mine and replace the cool 83 Cherokee grill with the 79/80 unit (yecch). I'll get back on topic by noting that the two previous owners used it entirely on the street so there's almost no significant rust. Only on the skidplate.

Thanks for the website compliment too. It's not fancy, but it passes the time away. It should start to get better once I buy my own digital camera and quit "borrowing" one from work. ;)

engine runs great.

78 J10 360/Auto/quadra. Sitting next to a recovery place for about 6 months went in and asked who's it was. He answered it was a guy's in Arizona. I asked what is he going to do with it. He stated he ws taking it to the crusher next week. I asked if he could sell it, he said give me what the guy owed on it and it's yours. I was thinking even 600.00 is a good deal. Primer campershell and no rust at all. Well he said he owed $100 on it I just about fell over when he told me that. I gave him the money after lunch and he even towed it to my house for free about 40 miles.

That is my first FJS Jeep. still is a project.

I do have a 88 XJ stock daily driver. $400.00
93 XJ $4300 stock now 3.5 Rubicon 31's dana 44

While just looking for a rear end Dana 44 XJ I also found an 83 J20. The yard wanted $175 per axle or $350 for the whole truck. well no question there since it is complete and still had air in 3 tires LOL
SO I SCORED A XJ Dana 44 and a complete 83 J20 for parts what a day.

I think I got mine for the cheapest of all. $120 Canadian, thats like $80 to you. The turbo 400 needs new clutches and bands, so instead I bought a 350 horse 350 and an SM465 to throw in it. The only problem besides the worn tranny is rust. Not too bad, but it will take some serious welding to fix it. Oh well, its fun and cheap.

Paid a hefty $4200 for Mistress, but she's been worth it. Came with 102,000 miles, owners manual, no rust, new factory color blue paint, and a perfect skidplate with no scratches (until I tried out the 4X4 system). Rebuilt the trans at 125,000 and has 149,000 miles now. Misc. parts here and there for maintenance and restoration purposes. Lift kit and tires have been the only big expense.

Wife complained about buying "some old junk heap" when I decided to get a FSJ. It's been 3 years of starting everytime the key is turned. Mistress just wanted to prove her wrong. Besides, I think the wife's bonded to Mistress after hauling all those "special sale" items.

Free. Father gave it to me ten years ago and the only hitch is that I have to deliver the Christmas tree every year. He had the engine, tranny and t-case rebuilt before then and I've only managed @20K miles on it since.

J10/J20Project you lucky devil!
Bought my J10 for $850 hadn't been registered in 11 yrs, wouldn't move under it's own power. A hour later and a tuneup and it runs great and has been my daily driver since! Some new 32's and the smog equipment is about all I've sank into it.

Bought a J4000 parts truck for $150, it was missing the D60, hubs, pwr steering pump and box but rest was there, engine is supposed to have about 5k on rebuild but hasn't been started in 10 yrs. I soaked the rings, primed and fired right up. Now I have a spare 360/T18/D20 under my work bench :D

The Cherokee (always liked them) was had for $500, vacuum lines were messed up so wouldn't idle for nothing but drove home 70mph no problem. QT is missing low range but bought RB's.

Hmmmmm what's next?

I paid $950 for my '72 waggy in 1997... drove it 120 miles home at 75-80mph with no problems. Got the itch to go wheeling and the rest is history. I've put some money into it, but not very much. (student's budget)... The brakes still don't stop the thing, especially when wet, the motor needs rebuilt, the tranny leaks, and the 3.31 gears just don't get the job done, but I can't complain. There's nothing like schooling a CJ, YJ, FJ or TJ at a fraction of the cost.

$4000 for my 1991. i went to the lot to check it out, salesman said $5000. i was willing to pay it but when i went there the next day,the owner of the lot was the only one there. i said i wanted it and he said $4000. miscommunication
saved me a grand. i don't see myself changing from fsj's anytime soon
