Ive only ever seen/read about them in cj's.
4 cyl only, iirc
Saw one, in person, and thats it!
very rare in anything, but iirc they also frequently used them in cj transport tugs.

I saw one back in 1972 at the dealership I later worked at. The mechanic said that they could run it up against the side of the building, let out the clutch in 1st (low range I assume) and the tires would break loose. It would idle in gear on pavement up against the barn...
A few members of the Early CJ-5 board have them. Rare now, but not outrageously rare. A lot of them are gone becasue they were even slower than the F134 equipped Jeeps, so it takes a special owner to keep the diesel.

A guy I knew in south jersey ran a perkins diesel in his old late 60's? international 4x4. 6cyl engine and slow as anything but I'm sure it would have moved houses. I wish I had a picture of it.

I can do that with my j20 in high range 1 st gear (6.32) just hold the brake and let out the clutch slowly and it will break loose

I used to work with a guy that put a Perkins in a 62 Chevy pickup, couldn't kill it, I think he still has it after 30 years. They are pretty gutless but run forever.

Interesting - I never knew they put Perkins engines in Jeeps - you see them all the time in Landies over here - the 4.3 straight six turbo diesel is meant to be very good, certainly a lot better than LR's own diesels.

My grandpa was a mechanic and put a perkins diesel in his late-60's dodge truck. He pulled a huge 5th wheel trailer he and my grandmother lived in all around the country. When he passed away, my dad parked it in his driveway and it's been sitting for about 15 years now. No one wants it, cuz it's too loud and way too smokey! But my dad won't let it go, either.

Another thing I think is funny. At work we have a caterpillar skid steer loader. Cat says the engine is theirs (in the brochure) but I can look at the engine and clearly see perkins on the name plate. I never even knew they were still around untill I saw that.

My grandmother had a 1960 model Massey Ferguson MF35 Diesel Deluxe farm tractor.
It was powered by a 3 cylinder Perkins Diesel.
It was awesome.
It had a brush grill installed on the front.
Using the brushhog attachment, the rule of thumb was, if the tractor with its brush grill could ride it over (small trees), the brushhog would cut it down.
The Perkins extreme low end torque grunt on the PTO driving the brushhog made quick work of clearing a grown over field.
I can't image having a power plant like that in a CJ sized trail rig.
It would be un-stoppable.
I do not think Perkins ever built an engine large enough to power a FSJ (at least at highway speeds)
AFAIK, Perkins stills builds Diesel engines for industrial use, like compressors and generators.

Apparently a CJ without the Perkins won't - otherwise they wouldn't have mentioned it. If I could go back in time, I'd find out more.
