the rear driveshaft yoke in my 74 cherokee is the strap type and I have problems with it breaking them at bad times(like while pulling the boat up the ramp). Ive got a u-bolt yoke off a front 44, can I simply switch or am I gonna need a different u-joint while I'm at it? It would be nice to tow with this rig again with enuff confidence that its not gonna spit out a u-joint or break another strap.

Switch to U Bolts instead of straps. Drill out the holes and put a U Bolt set in . There is a link around the net for a fix in the CJ don't see why that would work for the FSJ

Or you can go with Billet caps that bolt on and forget about it forever. Not expensive, and no hassel changing yokes. Go to a drag/strip racing catalog and they can set you up.

OK rather than drilling or buying new parts, I have a yoke off a 44 front that uses ubolts, can I simply swap it for the strap type?

Depends on size of yoke.

If it's a 1310, then yes you can.
If it's a 1350 or 1410 (the 1 ton's), you will need larger u-joints.

btw, don't drill or buy new parts, try swapping the one you have. ;)

One more thing, when beefing u joints something to remember, when you're wheeling "HARD" all those stresses take their toll and sooner or later something has to 'give'. What 'something' do you want that to be? Something easy to carry spares, small quick etc. like U=joints? or driveshafts, axleshafts...etc. smile.gif

Just a thought smile.gif
