While installing new bearings onto my axle using redneck engineering, my bearing came apart while tapping into place on axle. Used a 1 1/2 pipe to slide over axle and tap on inner ring (seat) of bearing. After a few whacks the bearing came apart. Is this supposed to do this, and do they make a solid bearing, instead of the big race and little ring.
Thanks...

You may have saved yourself some trouble without even trying!! The bearing you blew apart, have the outside race and inside race, all held together with a snap ring? If so its the wrong bearing. You can not use this style bearing it is meant for C Clip axles. I know it is a Set 10 bearing and the parts guys gave it to you, and it is listed as ONE of the correct bearings, however it is not. Use a TIMKEN bearing. Another thing save yourself some agrevation and possibly injury or death, spend the $20.00 or so and have the bearing and keeper pressed on by a shop. Buy the correct bearing from a place where they will press it on and sometimes they cut you a break on the $$$$. I have nasty pictures of what happens after using the wrong style bearing, only after about 500 miles too!!!

yes, the correct bearing for the non-c clip type is a tapered, conical bearing set. and make sure the outer seal (no inner seal in this application) will tap into the hole, not ride on a rubber "bump" on the outside edge. the seal is used to seat the cone into the outer race. if it doesnt go in all the way there will be play in the bearing. NO PLAY (in-out) is allowed. any in-out play will give you up-down play also. not good.

does anyone have a part number for those bearings? And thanks for the help. This was the bearing that was in there thus the reason it only lasted a year. If anyone has a part # for those bearings would be helpfull.
Thanks

It is a set #10 that is what they go by. Different brands have the different styles. The only way to be sure you get the right one is to open the box up before you write the check. I have not seen the Timken Brand with the snap ring style captive races. I would find who sells the Timkin and go that way.
