View Full Version : summertime blues...
85 GW old and worn, just like me. We're having our annual 2-weeks of hot weather here in N. Idaho and Mr. Jeep is dying at low speeds and failing to start again. Leave him alone for a while and the old boy will crank right up. Any ideas for a cheap fix it meself? thanks....

Check and see if the choke is opening all the way?
Make sure wire to choke is getting 12 volts when key is on.
New air filter.
Make sure the trap doors are opening all the way thats on the air filter snout when it's all warmed up too.

Claw, what year is your Jeep? what model? By chance is it a Green W/T Cherokee? Just curious, I've been in CDA looking around and saw a great looking Cherokee on 19th st. MG smile.gif
85 yaller GW - and me new ignition module got me about 4 blocks. ******* thing starts just fine when cold, runs for a little while, but then dies, like you turned the key off, after a while. took it back to the shop - reading through the posts I saw something about a pickup coil in the distributor? would bad float level cause this? put a new coil, rotor/cap on, now new ig. module, I HAD TO GO BUY A ***** riceburner - not cool. Any ideas, folks?

I had that problem with my 75 Wag and changed everything and it ended up being the pickup coil. It runs about $40 for the pickup coil for the older ones (pertronix setup) just a little piece of plastic, but the old one was able to move and like you say its just like you turned the key off, maybe it would run and maybe not. If you have a Federated parts store in CDA their quality in their electrical parts are much better than NAPA. Hope this helps MG smile.gif By the way I dont know about the newer models (they went to a different electronic setup in like 78 for ignition) but rather than pay $40 for just the pickup coil I paid $55 for a rebuilt distributor and it comes with a new pickup coil in it.

Ignition coil can also cause this symptom. It heats up much more than the ignition module and since you've already replaced one, why not replace the other. The ignition coil it very susceptible to breaking down when hot especially if it's old to begin with.
Yeah, for $15, you can change the coil before moving on to the pick-up coil that is more expensive.
I would've started with the coil but that's only because it's cheaper and more likely to fail. But, every time you replace your coil, you should replace your module as they tend to wear at the same rate.

sounds like a ballast ressistor wire to me...mine would start fine and then die...
replaced mine and was fine....
that's the symtom of a bad ballaster wire...starts but dies or runs terrible and then dies.....
won't stay running....its a ford wire(ressistor wire) from 1962-1996

Is the pickup coil in the distributor thus requiring removal of the same? And from where to where does the ballast resistor wire go? MR. Jeep is stuck at the shop - waiting for them to get to it - if replacing these is simple I'll jsut go do it. thanks so much for everyone's suggestions!
