Getting ready to drop the old Q/T and replace it with another. Is there any "secrets" or any special instructions that I need to know? Any and all will be appreciated!!!

First time I did mine, I didn't know there was a plate in the floor to gain access to some of the bolts.

it is somewhat weighty. plus on mine, when i took it out, i needed to remove the reduction unit first. then take off the case. but beware, when removing the reduction unit, it STILL has fluid in it. DOH! lol. plus hint for when it goes back together, make sure it is tight against everything before tighting all the bolts, i snaped of an ear on my reduction unit, had it welded back on, still holds.
boy, thats alot of times to type reduction unit.

I've read that you should equip yourself with either some studding (threaded rod) or a couple of long bolts with their heads sawed off to act as guides when sliding the case onto the transmission output shaft. I seem to remember the thread is 3/8" UNC, but check first!
These temporary guides serve to prevent damage to the pair of back to back oil seals that the tranny output shaft passes through. They need to be four or five inches long I think, and you screw them into the flange on the tranny prior to offering up your QT...

AzFrank,
What's the chances of getting one of those manuals?? Where can I find them? I'd be glad to pay for one. Let me know.

I usually pull it full of fluid. You could drain it, but plenty stays in it after draining tho. The tranny will drop a quart or so when you seperate them. When replacing, it is better to use gasket paper than just RTV between the tranny and QT.
Big Red - From reading you rig info, looks like you might have a part time conversion in the one you are pulling? On a stock QT with lock out hubs, you do not want to unlock the hubs unless you have the QT in EDrive (or locked).

AzFrank-had to trade the seats, my butt was to wide!! LOL Another FSJer has them in his rig in Tucson. I would look those copies of the service manual!!!
Flint- mine does not have the part-time kit. I put in the hubs and was going to put the transfer case in edrive with the hubs unlocked. This is when I discover the bits inside the case.

Big Red - Cool on the hubs and locked QT. Sorry to hear about the chunks inside. These things are pretty straight forward to R&R. Good Luck!
