So, I went to go get gravel today, I warned the place that it is only a half-ton and that it has 33 year old suspension, but they did not care I spose. I weighed 4720 lbs. when I drove onto the scale (me and my buddy in the car), and when I got on it after they put in the gravel, I weighed in at 9950 pounds. I was sooooooooo happy when I got out and saw that my truck looked like it did. Luckily I only had to drive 2 miles, and somehow my truck bounced back into shape. I am taking it to a trail tomorrow though, we will see how it is. Here is the before and after picture. (P.S. We sang that low-rider song the whole way home)

Been there done that LOL Mom used to deliver the city directories each book weighed 18 pounds and they came on 1 ton pallets on the train. We used to back my old 64 1/2 ton ford up and have them set the whole pallet on it even with 2K overload coils the rear bumper would almost touch the ground.

my old 58 Apache looked like that coming from the gravel yard when I redid my yard in Boise. I too was pretty concerned. The frame was on the rear axle. But, if there was a benefit, it felt like it had power steering for that very slow drive home..
Hope everything under there is ok.
HEY! Isnt the gas tank back there on the J-Trucks? Hope you were not throwing sparks!

My mom did that to an s10 and drove it home in overdrive. it wore 2-3 in off the mudflaps and the bumper was about 6 in off the ground oh and the wheight slip ---- 1650 lbs of crushed limestone. it split the sprag assy in half and did all kinds of stuff in there.

Time to toss some M715 springs under the rear of that thing!
BTW, your truck looks great!

Don't make a habit of this is my advice.
Been there and done that countless times with my poor old half-ton '53 Dodge truck. Hauled home numerous 3000+lb loads--many over 20 miles away. Never did say my daddy got his seed back in me, and not the brightest thing on my part for me to do this to my equipment, but the old beast got the load home each and every time--may God bless me and that old truck.
Oh bruddah the stupid things I used to do in trying to play Superman with that miserable old hack....!
Again: Don't make a habit of this; not very smart if you want to keep your truck acting young.....
Your title says it all.

 man this brings back memories, my dad decided to build a sand box for me and my brother several years ago (when dad still owned the J) so he went to the local yard and the guy told him each scoop was 1 ton, so they put the first scoop in, then the second, and dad asked for one more, the lift operator told him that truck wouldn't handle another scoop, but he put one on there anyways, and when dad jumped in to drive off it wouldn't move, the guy told dad that he tried to warn him, but dad just smiled and said he forgot to release the emergency brake, popped the brake, and drove off leaving the man with his thoughts.
as fore mentioned, not to be advised on a regular basis.

all the loaders at the rock places here have scales built into the buckets. they don't even use drive on scales anymore. loaded my dads 93 3/4 ton chev with a little over 2,000 lbs, it was arse down the whole way. glad we didn't take my 91 half ton on that trip.

Did that a few times with my old j10- sure could haul alot with that truck. Used to haul boulders in the back- would winch them up a sliding ramp into the back and haul them one at a time to where I was building a waterfall for my mother-in-law. When I was a kid, my Dad had a limestone quarry. People would come up all the time for small 1 inch minus crushed limestone as well as for the fines. Trouble was the fines had a high iron content and was very dense. We would let people take as much as they wanted but warned them to do it in several trips- had two guys with a 1 ton toyota that snapped the rear axel. They did not even have the fines up to the top of the wheelwells in the bed! I'd take the 1/2 ton rated j10 any day over the toyota. :D

Ya, haha, I definitely won't be doing that again, it scared the crud out of me and I haven't been laughed at that much by on-lookers since my shorts got pulled down during a rugby game. embarassing. :o I still cant believe it, 5200 pounds, my truck doesnt even weigh that much. oh well, I got funny pictures.

Did that with the '76 last fall moving dirt. That's why I have a new to me set of rear springs in the garage waiting to go on. When I loaded the J the back end was parked on the sidewalk, when I drove off and the wheels went over the curb the whole bumper was on the ground (sounded real good dragging it off). The nut for the bumper hitch dug a gouge in the sidewalk  .
Hope your springs recover!

I work at a gravel pit, and have brought 2-ton loads home in my J10 before. Makes it hard to keep the wheels that steer down.
I am looking into a J20:)

I went on a canoe trip about 6 years ago. When everyone arrived we all pilled into my Waggy and went up the fire break to the drop off site:fsj: . I had 5 full coolers on the roof, 10 people in the Jeep and I was towing 5 canoes behind me. My back end was saggin pretty bad but I thought nothing of it. We got to the drop off site and unloaded the people, coolers and canoes. the wag never came back up. I permanently bent the springs:( .
Oh well, give me a beer and lets get in the water  .

I was on Parade duty one year and I hooked up the flatbed trailer to my J-10 and started thru town loading those orange cones for traffic control. I could feel it sag more and more. When we got them all, I backed the truck up to un hitch the trailer, and my step bumper was almost folded in half. The area where the bumper rolls under for the ball was all rusted out inside and it just folded up. I got a good laugh out of it. And a free replacement.....
