View Full Version : Had to smile and say no thanks today

So I get to school today, and I walk in and tell my buddy that my Wag takes forever to heat up. Some kid overhears me and walks over like he is interested in takin it off my hands. So he asks all the questions, axles, whats been done, engine, etc. So we have about 5 minutes till class, and I say "So you are interested in it?"
"Ya, I think that $200 is enough right?" (holds out 20 $10 bills)
"Uhh, no?"
I wanted to punch that kid in the face cause I felt like he just put me and Mr. Jeepers down. But instead of getting in trouble, I smile, thank him for his offer and let him know if I am interested in selling it.

This has happened a few times since I have had it, along with it being called a POS (by someone who drives a roached out CJ that I had to get unstuck one time), not worth the money that I am willing to put in it, a pointless piece of machinery, a useless thing off road, and a poorly running gas hog that spews smoke (which came from an environazi).

Does anyone else hear only crap from other people about their rigs? Or is it just cause all these haters are jealous?

Ignore them. That's all I can say, just ignore them. They aren't you, it's not their ride, their money, their engine, or their problem. Just handle your business and pull out that CJ as many times as he gets stuck.

Everyone's got an opinion, but most people's opinions about cars are based on how they've been taught to think about cars by advertising and our "car as status" society.

That said, FSJs are certainly an acquired taste. The unique factor, though, is unmatched by any other vehicle available IMO.

There was only one time when someone said something negative about my Wag that stuck with me. My flight chief, a crusty old senior master sergeant, pulled into the parking lot at the same time as me. He got out of his truck and came over to Herc to size her up. He took a good 3 or 4 minutes or so just looking it over silently, peeking in the windows, looking at the frame and such. I watched silently standing in one spot waiting for whatever nugget of wisdom he was going to drop on me. Finally he strolls up to me and says, "I like wood......on a house", looks at me for a second, and walks off. Say what you will about my Wag, but wood rules!

They're jealous, or too immature to appreciate them. If you find yourself around a late twenty something early thirties age crowd, you will notice a huge difference. That's one of the reasons I love to drive mine.

By the way, yours is a sweet ride (by the recently posted pics) and should definately be a long term keeper.

Reminds me of when I was trying to sell my MGB; I had offered it at £1200ono. So, I get a phonecall froma guy who asks sensible questions and says he'll come down and have a look at it. So, he turns up, spends an hour looking round the thing, takes it for a test drive, examines all the bills that add up to £1100 in the last six months, then offers me £500! GRRRRRRRR:mad: BTW, I did sell it for £1200, in the end.

No this has not happened to me.

Although,
Just the other day picking my son from school.

I was walking from the school out to the truck with my son.
One of the supervisors of the after school program noticed a new Jeep commander out front and looked over at me and said " Is that your new Jeep"? " I wonder how they drive"?
I replied "NO mine is the old school JEEP truck over there"

Which he replied "Oh now that's a JEEP" :drivin:

My wife is the only one that puts the old wag down. She keeps telling me it reminds her of the 1965 Chevelle 2 door wagon that her dad used to drive her to school with. Now that was a cool car.
My neighbors and friends know I always drive cars that are rare or different and said this is the best one I've owned. "It's a keeper" one of them said.:D

I PICKED UP A LITTLE OLD LADY'S (NO KIDDING) 83 CAMRY AT AN ESTATE SALE SEVERAL YEARS AGO.

WHEN I ADVERTISED IT I HAD NO LESS THAN 20 CALLS THE FIRST DAY.

SUPER "A-HOLE" SHOWS UP LOOKS IT OVER AND OFFERS ME LESS THAN HALF OF WHAT I WANTED FOR IT! AS I'M TRYING TO REEL IN MY JAW THAT DROPPED FROM THE SHEAR GALL OF SAID "A-HOLE" THE PHONE RANG WITH SOME ONE ASKING ABOUT THE CAR.... (TALK ABOUT TIMING)
I EXPLAINED THAT I HAD JUST BEEN LOW BALLED AND WOULD HE LIKE TO COME LOOK AT IT.... HE DID AN GOT IT FOR $50.00 LESS THAN I WAS ASKING FOR IT.

"A-HOLE" SHOWED BACK UP JUST AS WE WHERE SIGNING THE PAPER WORK AND TRIED TELLING THE GUY THAT WE HAD ALREADY MADE A DEAL!!!!!

I VERBALY "ESCORTED" HIM OFF OF MY PROPERTY.

DON'T LET TOOL'S LIKE "10 SPOT" GOOF WITH YOU.... THEY'RE EVERY WHERE AND NOT WORTH YOUR TIME!

Tell the enviro-nazi that not only are you a true preservationist by trying to restore & preserve your older vehicle, but the poor cows they are trying to save (by being vegetarians) are actually causing more of the global warming and o-zone depletion.

By restoring your rig, you are helping save the environment......the new cars are quite often produced in third-world countries using old, environmentally harsh methods and don't have the same environmental requirements we have here. They strip-mine the land, don't prevent stormwater run-off, and leave hazardous waste behind that gets dumped on the land. By fixing your old rig, you are one-step above recycling and helping the environment. Their new hybrid Honda's impact the environment more when they are being produced than your rig ever would, even when improperly tuned.

The folks I get the most comments from are young ladies. My step daughter cringes when I say "let's take the Wag." She sees it as little more than a stationwagon with, "oh my God! wood paneling!"

What really confuses her is that ALL of her friends see it and make a point of coming up to me and telling my how much they dig my old woodie. Of course I keep getting asked if they can take it to the beach..

I have had women in minivans look at me at the stop light and smile and nod. I have had folks walk up to me as I get out of it in a parking lots and ask about it and typically say "I love those things..where did you ever find it?"

The best was a kid in his early 20's. He pulled his TJ up to me in a parking lot. I was parking and he was leaving. He knew what it was and was trying to explain it to his girlfriend. THey get out to look it over. I was surprised that he knew about the GW's. All went well until his lady friend smiled at me and said, "I really like you Big Jeep. Wood is cool!" I don't think he knew how to take it. I smiled, thanked them both and told them to have a great day.

Of course, I have also found that riding around with a 105 lb Husky in the back with his head out the window helps too.. I like to think the ladies are looking at me, but I know it is Grizwald that gets all the chicks..

I used to get stuff like that all the time when I had my GW back in HS. Now in college w/the W/T most of the comments I get are more funny than insulting like:

"How many Exons did you have to rip off to fill that thing up?"

"What are you going on a safari or something?" Tad rack, tire, hi-lift& lights on top...

"Wait, THAT'S a Cherokee? Are you sure it's not a Grand Cherokee?"

My favorite to date:

"When I saw you jump on the hi-way I thought you were some old geezer gonna go model T speed but **** that thing hauls ***!"

you have to understand that he has no clue what they are worth?ect. yes, our FSJ don't blue book for much. but, we do have the added benifits of a healthy V-8, strong drive train, and a plentiful supply of parts. with FSJ getting their parts from FORD, Chevy, dodge. We can get simple up grades with out the price tag. besides jeep is the original suv. stick to us, and we'll get ya along!
OH and my girl friend loves driving my Heep! "I get checked out more in this, than your 03 tacoma that you sold!"

Yea, and the worst thing is....he KNOWS it! This smile pretty much IS him:

He will stay in the YJ even with the top off, cause he knows it is HIS. Not tlike that in other vehicles. I have regularly come out of stores to find groups of people (mostly women) surrounding the jeep petting him and calling him and the whole nine yards. You would think, in 11 years, I would have landed 1 date from one of his groupies....but NO! They ask me about him, play with him, ask if they can borrow him...and nothing for Bryan.

For a pound mutt, he must have been royalty in a past life or something. But, he has been a loyal and true friend since the day he agreed to come home with me and I am grateful to have him..

Next time, tell the interested woman that he had a really sad story.....his life was lonely and empty, becuase his owner really wanted to meet a pretty lady who liked dogs, but hadn't had the nerve to ask one out......and Grizwald hated seeing his owner & friend so unhappy.....and ask her if maybe she knew a way to help out with the situation ;)

That might help things along......

People have stopped telling me I should get rid of the Waggy and buy a new suv finally, I'm glad, I was getting tired of explaining it over and over again. Still get a few odd looks from kids on dirtbikes when offroad, they don't expect to see it go right up a steep slick hill. Nobody really comments it when they see it, I just get a few odd looks, and the occasional wave or honk from another Jeeper or offroader. Thankfully nobody offered to buy it for some stupid low price. Most kids would rather drive a pos old Civic it seems than anything like this. Oh well, more old iron for me.

I get mixed results about my ride. Some people really love it, the idea of fixing up an old vehicle triggers some sort of nostalgia. Others are elitest about their car culture, not realizing what an important contribution AMC made to the industry (first AWD, for example) or how many hard-working good people depended on it as a workhorse. If it's not a Pontiac or Chevy, people don't give it a second thought.

I've been lucky that repairing my wag has been as practical as it has been fun. Why spend $20-30k on a new car when worst-case scenario I need a longblock for 2k or a rebuild for 5? And if something goes wrong on my Jeep, it's not that hard to fix. My mom's crown vic has 19 bolts on the timing cover. Jeep? Well, you can count them on one hand.

My parents, the PO, several times pulled loser offroaders out of sand, water, mud, you name it; I get offers all the time from people on it. In fact, our UPS guy had a GW and was always sharing stories and actually tried to buy our wag for parts several times.
Glad to hear you know what yours is worth!

I had my j-10 at Bloomsburg Pa. 4wd jamboree a few years back and a buddy of mine was there with his big ch*vy. He laughed and said "why don't you sell that old, rusted out pos and get yourself a ch*vy). I said "why, so I can be like everyone else here?" There was close to 800 trucks there and probably 10 fsj's. Everywhere you looked was Ford, ch*vy, Toyota, baby jeeps, and Dodges, HOW BORING IS THAT? I asked. It shut him up and made him understand my insanity bit more.
The best for me was when I was :fsj: down I-95 in Phila. and a bunch of kids with Ontario plates gave me the  and took cellphone pictures as we were cruising side by side. I wish I could see how they turned out.

Would'nt trade the jeep for the world.

heh while i had mine the first time i had no looks from anyone.. at that time it looks like it ran head to head with a train and won.. only time i got any looks from people was when i pulled them out of the ditches with a lil ice on the road with it. unfortuneatly it died and i had to sell it to a buddy for a100 bucks ( he REALLY wanted it bad) and the city was fixing to impound it.. some stupid rules about not having fixer uppers in city limits or something like that:banghead:i kicked myself in the bum ever since.. just got it back last week and scrambling to get some cash together to get it fully running again .. needs a t-case. and a new floor... and a new rear window set up .. it falls down every time it hits a bump.. witch is the reason it has no floor. other then that i will NEVER NEVER NEVER get rid of it again . the city laws can go to hell.
