This '81 Cherokee has me a bit confused. It's got FACTORY Locking Hubs and the flag shifter pattern is 2H-4H-N-4L. That led me to think that it's got a 208...

...but, going to the parts store to look up parts for this particular Cherokee shows a 219 and 228 t-case. Can somebody verify shift patterns for each t-case? It would be much appreciated for future reference.

That's the shift pattern for a 208 and locking hubs is the clincher. If you are going into a "chain" parts store like AutoBlown I wouldn't take what they show as gospel. A pimple-faced kid at the'zone tried telling me one time that my 73 J4000 COULDN'T have a 360 because his computer said so. I almost strangled him....

Crawl under and read what the tag on the transfer case says it is. Remove any doubt that way.

That's cheating.

Aw give zit-face a break! After all what are those folks getting paid an hour? Ya git what ya pays fer--don't fergit it!

I always seek out grey hair when looking for answers in a chain automobile parts store, or--better yet--spider veins on the nose.

Don't feel bad.

These dammed parts stores keep telling me that my starter is easily available. AND IT'S A DELCO.

I even told them it's a Prestolite. Geez...

Earl,
The 228 case was only available for the 86 model year. However, some Cherokees 80 thru 82 could have come with the 219 full time case. But, it wouldn't have had locking hubs.
Like already stated above, if in doubt, check that round tag on the back of the case.

These stores seem to all use the same database, and the Jeep stuff is notoriously incorrect. "There's no carb rebuild kit for a '67 gladiator but it does show one for a '67 wagoneer." "Well sir, I have a wagoneer, just get me the kit, please."

You got to outsmart their computer if you want the right stuff.

not trying to hijack the thread but, in relation to the 208 case itself. if the shifter tab is all the way to the back how does the shift patter go with a stick shifter?

Similar to the flag shifter. With the floor shifter, 2WD is far forward, and 4Lo is far back.

ok so with the shifter in the position its in which is slightly forward the pattern will be

2HI
4HI
N
4LO

OR

2HI
N
4HI
4LO

Yup, even on a Dodge or GM 208 that was the pattern (not sure if Ford ever even had a 208 application).
