View Full Version : Are there any Twin Stick Cable Shifter Kits

I have a QT with a part time kit and a low range unit. I was thinking of converting the QT to a cable shift, and get rid of the vacuum shift. While I was doing this I thought maybe I might convert to a twin stick transfer case shifter, I could then have the choice of 2 or 4 wheel drive on one stick, and Hi Low on the other stick.
The question is are there any Twin Stick shifting kits that use cables for shifting, that already come in a prebuilt housing that I could mount on top of the transmission hump.
Thanks

as i am sure others will chime in, there is no twin stick capability for the q/t transfer case even with a part time kit(as far as i know)

The answer to your question is yes there is but it won't do you any good with that Q/T transfer case.

I think everyone miss understood. I know that the qtrac does not have twin stick shifters for it, or that it was ever an option. I have upgraded the qt to partime, which means I use the Edrive vacuum switch to engage the transfer case from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive, and lock the hubs. I also have a low range unit on the qt so I either have Hi or Low depending on if I engage the low range unit.
What I want to do, is convert the vacuum shift system to a cable shift system, like the one done buy BigRedChief (http://www.buildyour4x4.com/index.php?id=51). If I do that then I would no longer have to open the glove compartment to go from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive.
I figured if I was converting to cable shift for the edrive, I could convert the low range unit to a cable shift instead of rod actuated. This would give me a cable acctuated edrive and low range.
If I found a cable actuated twin stick shifter, I could modify it to operate the cables from the edrive and the low range.
This would mean that one stick would operate the 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive and the other stick would engage the low range unit.
Stick 1 - 2 to 4
Stick 2 - Hi to Low
What I wanted to know from you guys, is if you know of any cable operated twin stick shifter kit that I could use a base to start, I would prefer them to have their own housing that I could just mount to transmission hump, and route the cables over the trasmission. If you don't think it would do any good whats the reason. Basically all I want is just to have the operation for the transfer case all in the same spot.

Yup no reason why that would not work. Older 73 74 Q-Trac Low Range was operated by Cable, so thats doable. I can't see any reason why you could not fab something up to do what you want.
i made one.it worked great.one for 4wd and one for low range.its still mounted on the q track i have stored away.its very easy to do.the biggest problem is that the cableshifter has lots of leverage shifting the fork which is only held with small e clips.the cableshifters i used had stops built into them so you could limit the travel.they are the same cables used by klune v to shift thiers.they are made by cablecraft.you will have to take a vac shifter apart (cut off the can)and thread the end.
ill try to take a few pix this weekend.

yep. just grab (or copy) the cable shift linkage from an old QT rig with cable-operated low range.
I've heard of some of those part time kits being threaded for cable shift, but I know nothing about it.
If you can figure out how to do that, by all means use a twin stick to shift it.
