Here we go. This in addition to my earlier post. My Vaccum Advance popped loose yesterday causing my idle to jump very high.
I put it back together and retuned everything. It was running good. Now it is doing it again. The idle is jumping up about 400 rpms. I am thinking it is the distributor and will replace tonight but it does not do it all the time. Looking for any answers. All help is appreciated.

does it do it all the time(high idle) or just some of the time? I had an idle rpm problem that came and went and traced it to a vacumn leak at the heater door.the hose had split off the diaphram.after looking for a month of sundays I finally noticed it was only doing it when i had the defrost on smile.gif

Just every once and a while. I am thinking that the vaccum advace diaphram or the springs in the distributor are sticking. It basically is in the distributor. Because the timing is advacing and staying that way. The idle screw does not make any diffrence and neither the mixture on the carb. When i take the vaccum off the dist. It will eventually quit. The advance basically popped out that is why I am thinking it is it. Not sure though.

Sounds like your distributor is wore out, remove the rotor and see if you can move the shaft side to side. If you can, the dist is shot and it is time for another one. This problem is not that uncommon on AMC motors with high mileage. With the Delco points type it is even worse.

Well I replaced the distributor last night. It ran much better but the idle kept going up and down about 400 rpms. So I thought I must have a vacuum leak. After about an hour I did find one. It was the line with the "bowl valve" which leads to the carb. While disconnecting the line the valve broke.
I reconnected it without the valve and now it idles rough and high. Idle mixture screw is adjust as low as it can go. The mixture is as lean as I can get it. Pinging is back due to that. I am at a loss of what is wrong. Played with it for 6 hours last night. Timing is set 12 deg. Drives fine..Just the idle is really bad.
