I am thinking of going to look at this Jeep tuesday and was looking for some opinions. Is it a good price? Any pitfalls in a '77 I should look for? I have a '88 GW but like the look of the two door. Also, The ad says "Wagoneer Comanche" but isn't it a Cherokee? Any other inf I could get would be appreciated. I defer to the experts on the forum.

Thx,

Terry

Yep, it's a Cherokee. Obiously they don't know what the heck they've got.

Looks pretty good from the pic. Of course, most of your stuff in the Pac NW is pretty clean compared to here.
Price wouldn't be bad if is solid I wouldn't think.
Find out what the "new" motor is. If it's rebuilt, see if there are receipts to what was done. Could be a 401 lurking in there too, get the VIN

Looks like a sweet Cherokee 2 door narrow track. The price is cheap if it is all they say it is.
I would be leary of the title on it if they think it is a wagoneer. Not sure how serious a misnamed title is but would be something to look into. Check the VIN to see what it is suppose to be.
Here is a link for decodong the VIN

A J-10 would be cool but Az is a bit of a drive. Especially since the Cherokee would be kind of an impulse buy if I get it. After all who in their right mind owns more than one AMC Jeep. Oh wait I already have the '88 Wagoneer. So much for being in the "right" mind. ;):D

Looks nice, I'd be a little wary since they should be able to tell it's a Cherokee from the fact that is says "Cherokee" on it in several places. check the casting on the engine of course, should the vin happen to say it's a 401, and the 'new' motor is a 360, that would be quite a disappointment, and something to be looked into as well. If it's in very good shape with no major issues (lots of rust, internal engine problems, etc) 2500 would be a great price. Looks quite nice in that pic

So I went to look at and drive what was a Cheorkee of course. The VIN did indeed say that a 401 was supposed to be under the hood. I crawled underneath the car but didnt see the the 401 stamp. It might have been there but I only had a rough idea where to look. The "new" engine had been rebuilt by, from what I could ascertain, was some friends of the owner. Also, as a Quadra-Trac I was under the impression that there would not be locking hubs on the front... there was. Someone in the past must have done a part time conversion? The new interior quoted in the ad was a rather plain recovering of the surfaces. The front seats didn't seem to be secured down properly. In the Chero's credit it did seem to run fine and had recently passed emissions. It would indeed make a fine basis for a resto but I was totally unimpressed with the owners lack of knowledge about the car. And, rule #1 For selling a car...Take the For Sale sign the PO had in the car marked 1800obo out the the car b4 trying to resell it. :)
Suffice it to say I offered $1750 and left my number with the seller...

The owner called me back with a story that he can only have 2 vehicles at his apartment and now has 4....he decided to take my ofer of $1750 :) we'll see what I bought when I get it home. ;)

If you lie under the truck directly beneath the driver's side motor mount, you can look up directly above the mount and the displacement would be visible there. How did the Jeep run when you drove it, did you see the carb and how the engine compartment was done up? Hope you got a sweet deal.

So went after work this morning and picked up the Cherorkee. I work nights so I didn't get to play with her much. The good news is it was about 25deg. here this morning and the jeep turned over bout 3 times and fired right up. After driving her bout 20 miles to the in-laws' for storage, I have to say she ran great, stopped and turned well. On the outside she is all original paint, rims etc. Needs a few small trim pieces on the inside and out. Which I am sure I will be nagging everyone on the forum for :). I'll try to get some good pics up this weekend and find out for sure she is a 401. Feels more potent than my 360 waggy I have to say.....

Got to spend some quality time with the Cherokee. Fixed several little things. Discovered the headlights didn't work, new dimmer switch. The front brakes were howling, new pads. The temp gauge wasn't working, had to clean the rust off of the temp sensor lead. Had to go to the hardware store for a bolt for the drivers seat belt. Just draped it across my shoulder all legal like before.:) Just gotta figure out why the drivers seat feels like an 800lb gorilla sat in it. I lean back lowrider style. May just be all sprung. Or I could just slam the rig to the pavement. Not!

Nice rig. The bass sticker on the back is pretty sweet.
