View Full Version : Cruise Control Servo

Well, now that I know what the servo looks like, I know I can't find one under the hood. What I did find, though, was a bracket with two holes in it on the driver's side fenderwell next to the coffee can and ig module. Is this where the cruise servo was supposed to be? There's also s bunch (4 or 5) cut wires in the same area. I figured that if someone hijacked the control box, they likely plucked the servo too. Anyone?

sounds right if you are talking about where the speedo cable plugs into.

I'm not sure where the speedo cable actually plugs in. I'd have to have the servo in hand and see how it fits to figure out how to hook everything up.

Mine is missing the servo on mine as well. Sounds right that it should be next to the igninion module.
You must have a sweet FSJ to already be fixing the cruise comtrol.
That is WAY down the bottom of my list of things that need to be done.

It's not too bad, really. There's spots of surface cancer, the locks are messed up, and the rear window is slow, oh and it needs an exhaust gasket. Everything else works OK and it runs great for having over 200K on the ticker.

A wrecking yard near by has some cruise control parts if you need them.

Took these pics for you earlier on the eve.
In the first pic the servo is the dirty white round object in the center. You can trace the control cable running from out the back running up and over the brake servo/ under the wiper motor. It then curves back around to attatch to the throttle linkage can be seen in this shot kinda disappearing into the air filter. Do not confuse with the lower more obvious black cable which is the throttle cable.

The next shot somewhat shows how it connects into the linkage. The last bit of the cable is similar to sink plug change and hangs in a loop slack when not in use. It is the upper black cable that passes under the green and yellow vacuum hose from the firewall.

Oh yeah the brain box is found under the dash on the passanger side and is normally yellow.
cheers

Nobby, that beautiful! Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for. I'm guessing that the wiring will be self explanitory...just match up colors and splice away. Is that little black box right between the servo and the ig module a cruise control relay or is it something else?

I got my servo from Ebay yesterday! It was very complete. If I want to hook it up as is, I think I'll have to take the dash out. It may be easier to just splice the wires together as there is plenty of length there under the hood. Nobby, thanks for the pics, again.

Gas, with my luck, I'll get the servo hooked up and the controller plugged in, and the cruise still won't work. :) The next project is the 7 pin plug for trailering!

I finnaly got the CC hooked up! It works ok, except not like the manual says it should. When first turned on, you have to set it to the low speed of 30 mph. Then it can be adjusted by the R/A switch or accelerator and set at any speed up to 70 mph by pushing the set button twice quickly. Is this how it should work? Where should the adjustment wheels on the control box (where should the arrows be pointing?) be set to to make it work properly?

this site has the rostra crusie that is the company that bought dana the unit you have

i would also check all the hoses , i mean blow them out make sure they are clean check the storage tank , also check the cable make sure it is lubed and lays nicely , no kinks dont havea twist in it , check the speedo cables also they must turn smoothly as the signal the unit to maintain that speed and if they have a odd rotation such as dry lube or just alot of miles this will effect the spinning of the gyro unit, i know alot of pita items but it needs to be clean and all looked at, also check the under dash brake switch i dont know if they are vacuum or electir in your year but they can leak vacuum if old and ,the unit wil lhave trouble maintaing the speed setting, a worn motor will also under throotle the engine looses vacuum and i can only say throw a guage on the engine and see the vacuum it pulls at the cannister, i have been there on my j20 i took all componenets apart and cleaned and new lines and the unit works fabulous now

Thanks for the info, g! Just out of blind luck, I pretty much did what the tech sheet says to do. Or maybe that was beginner's luck.
lol
the cruise unit it self is an amazing thing it has a gyro an armeture like an electric motor and feeler pickups that are touching the gyro it neds to matc hspinning speeds and maintain them ,i like the electric ones way better

Is that the control box or the servo under the hood?
the unit the speedometer cables go to
Control Unit: compares the actual speed of the car and the selected speed. In the event of a deviation from the selected speed, the control unit sends pertinent control signals to the vacuum-actuated or electrically actuated throttle servo unit until the actual and selected speeds are again in agreement.
Transducer serves as a speed sensor that is mounted on the speedometer able (early version) or on the speedometer itself (later version). The transducer sends the actual speed signal to the Control unit.
Throttle servo unit (early version) a vacuum-actuated servo that positions the engine throttle to attain the selected speed. Later versions utilize an electric servomotor.
the caddilac has a cool system it runs itself

Update: The cruise works great! Even my wife can use it. :) It holds speed well and acclerates well. No jarring or anything.

Lost my cruise control after unplugging and removing ignition module (MSD installed now).

I'm not going to go with the MSD upgrade, but I will eventually do the TFI upgrade. Has anyone had CC issues after the TFI upgrade?

I'm using TFI and Mallory (like MSD) ignition module. Cruise works good, except the resume feature. I don't recall if the resume ever worked while I've owned the GW.

Actually I did the basic TFI at first, had CC.just like always.Unplugged and removed the ignition module and wired in MSD,with it's own wiring. But now have lost CC.I'm thinking that unplugging the module "interupted"any signal coming and going from the unit(behind washer/overflow tanks) or possibly to the controls on the steering column.
