View Full Version : Popped the cherry

Well, I popped the off road cherry tonight. Went up with a few other trucks (chevy 1500, chevy s10, ford ranger) to the trails up here in the Black Hills. Me and the 1500 are stock except some aux lights, and the S10 has a 3 inch lift while the Ranger has a 4 inch. I feel that I did as good or better than the S10 and Ranger. The S10 kept a distance behind me, and I was keepin up with the front two. A few minutes in though, the 1500 popped the tire off the bead and we had to change that.
I was really impressed on how this thing did. I could pull people out of stuff the others couldnt even drive out of. So I feel pretty good that I have some good use for all this power. Not once did I need to put it in low or use the lockers. And the stock suspension (in its slightly clapped out state) did pretty decent. I dont think that I will need to lift it for these trails up here. Havent inspected for any damage though, so I hope I dont find any unwanted damage when I crawl under it tomorrow.
What should I look at for damage? The diffs, and what else?

Check the diff covers, gas tank skid (if it still has one), and make sure you didn't crimp your tailpipe anywhere.
Also, be sure to check the rocker panels for any love taps

holy crap man! that Wagoneer is super nice! I definitely say keep it...but I ask of you not to cut the dash to install a CD Player or anything. that just wouldn't be right at all. I've never seen a 70's Wag with that kind of wood trim. Man, I LOVE that interior. Keep it nice, bro!

Ya, if I am going to change the audio at all, it will just be some bigger door speakers. And it was re-wooded about 10,000 miles ago.
Thanks for the kind remarks.

Do not sell that Jeep. You will kick yourself in the a** when you're older. I had a beautiful YJ I had when I was in high school. 30,000 miles, clean as a whistle, owned by a little old lady with a garage before me, and PAID OFF. I sold it because I was making an impulse decision and now I have pictures of it in my garage and on the fridge. It's been gone for about 9 years and I still kick myself.

I spose that I dont really need a truck though. I mean, my step-dad has a 2500 long box. And the truck I might get is a reg cab short box (IMO that is such a pointless truck it should have never been made) which will have close to no real use when I want to haul somethin.

WOW--NICE! That one is a definite keeper. You would only go downhill trading that for anything.

Well this is one very large point towards keepin this bad boy.
As much as I'd love to have this I have to tell you you'll look hard and long to find better off-road capabilities than what you've got. And in the end, if it's off-road fun you want, you'll come full circle back to a Full Size.
But if you're still thinking of getting rid of it...remember I'm first in line. :)

I think Im gonna have to wait till it doesnt run anymore to give it up. And even then I might track down a low miles 401 and throw it in there.
That thing is in nice shape. Keep it dent free on the trails, run it til the motor needs a rebuild, and then sell it. You could probably use that thing for 10 years and then make some money back on whatever you paid for it.
motox-010
01-27-2007, 11:48 AM
Why sell it once it needs some TLC? I figure I will run it till it needs a re-build, then re-build it and repeat untill no one stocks the parts needed for a re-build. I could sell it now and triple my total investment in it
But I will keep it mostly original and make all you haters jealous.

WOW nice looking Jeep there. Never seen one w/wood like that, factory?
Def keep it
motox-010
02-07-2007, 03:12 PM
I dont know if it is factory style wood. I know that the PO re-wooded and painted it about 15k miles ago though. He even gave me a sample in case I need to touch it up or need to re-paint.

Definitely not factory wood.
Very nice looking rig. It looks like someone took care of it.
I think it would look better without the wood or with the thin strip that they used in the 70's. Looks like PO wanted it to look "newer" when most folks think the "older" versions are more attractive. I know I do, and I have an 88.
Great rig. If you get bored, I would take a hair drier and a plastic scraper to the wood. If the PO repainted it, I bet there is nice shiny paint under there. A little buffing and you would have a very sharp silver rig.
Fo what it is worth, I had a 74 Buick LeSabre Convertable as my first vehicle. I have come close to purchasing "replacements" for that car at least twice in the last 16 years since I let her go.. Keep the old iron, you will be glad you did.
Just my 0,02.

I was really thinkin about takin that wood off actually. I knew that it didnt look right. Is there a #/letter on the vin that will tell me if it was an original woodie?

Should look like this...Only not faded

Judging by how that has the metal trim, I assume that mine was not an original woodie. Cause it does not have any marks of where that silver trim would have been. Am I right in thinking that the chrome trip would have had some holes that it would fasten to?
Heavy_Metal_Thunder_81
02-07-2007, 10:09 PM
Yes, there are holes behind the trim holding it on. Who knows what coulda been done to yours tho, they coulda been welded up or it just could been a factory non-woodie. I dont know if theres a # in the VIN to tell. Theres prolly a # somewhere else on a sticker on the vehicle that someone else will know where its at or it coulda been painted over and we may never know...
That's a great looking wag!

But that was a while back I see...
That is a 1975 Wagoneer Custom. The only year AMC put the wide wood grain on like that and some models carried the stainless trim along the top of the wood grain. The stainless trim uses fasteners that require holes in the sheet metal.

Wow! nice interior.
I have had a K5 and a Full size Bronco (79, when they were really big) and I am more impressed with the Wagoneer's off-road prowess.
It was a great looking Waggy before he drove it in the ground.
I still taste vomit when I think about what happened to that nice Waggy. :(

I still kick myself in the *** when I think about it too you guys.
But I'm young and dumb.
The Wag was just getting to be to much trouble, the driveshaft went out in January. So I replaced it. Then the driveshaft started to go out again, but before that the front u-joint tossed a couple caps some how. I decided then it was time for it to go to a new home.
Its with another Jeep person in Rapid though.
Also, in his log book he DID state that it was re-wooded and painted. He said it took him a VERY long time to find the ORIGINAL style full wood like that.

if you're gonna get a new head-unit, you can always go with the "retro" ones that LMCtrucks offers for Chevys; I'm sure it'll bolt right in, too.
http://www.lmctruck.com/pdfcatalogs/pdf/cb/CB15.pdf < Scroll to page 107. That's the one I'm talking about. I figure it should still look relatively stock compared to the new stuff; and still work as new stuff.
Just a thunk.
