i have recently had a friend's son put a new 360 engine in an 85 grand wagoneer.
problem: the starter pinion gear won't release once its running. my mechanic wants like $600 just to pull the transfer case to see what's going on. he thinks i have the wrong flywheel.
complication: there is no id label on the engine. it could be any year they used that engine.
question: can anyone tell me what different flywheels were used and if there is a way to fix it? or any other ideas?

thanx for your help.

Dunno??? but I would run from your mech!!!!
Usually the gear not disengaging is NOT the fault of the flywheel thats the last place I would start yankin parts check the fit of your starter at the mounting seems I recolect sumptin bout them being a little persnickty bout how mounted. Then I would would go after the starter itself.

what brazzy said. try backing both starter bolts off till they're hand tight and retighten them evenly. will only cost you some time. youcan do it in your driveway with a 9/16 box end. does sound like a starter prob. if that doesnt work try one from a jeep.i havent bought one for years (touch wood), but i guess not all starters are rebuilt equally. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
