I am fixin to swap out motors. I am taking a 360 out of a 79 Cherokee, and putting it into an 87 GWag. While I am at it, would it be best to go ahead and swap out the trannies also. If so how modification will I have to do. I will be taking out of the 87 a 727 with a 228 and possibly replacing it with the 400, but still keeping the 228. Will that work or should I just leave the tranny alone and just do my enginge swap. :rolleyes:

228, i believe you mean the 258 I6? I believe the 727s and 999/904s were the trannies used on the I6s. But I'm not sure at all. Just my $.0000002

I guess the first question would be which tranny is in better condition ?

Cory, the 228 is a reference to the NP228 transfer case. smile.gif

The only thing I know for sure is if you were transplanting a 401 with a 360 or vice versa you would have to change flex plates.

Well both trannies are in great shape, I just didn't know if one was better than the other. I really liked that 400 when I was driving it regularly. I am getting used to this 727. I am basically looking for opinions on either tranny, so when it comes time for the swap, I have made up my mind what Imma gonna do. And if I think about it long enough ill jusst confuse meself.

Rebuild the original. Here is a short list of what you would need to change in order to use the Th400 tranny in your '87:

* Transfer Case
* Front axle
* Regear one axle to match the other

OTOH, if you use that '79 engine in your '87, make SURE to remove the bushing for the TH400 converter snout in the back of that crankshaft. It will be too small for the TF727 converter, and if you some how managed to get the engine bolted up, you would push the converter back into the front-pump and destroy the pump.

If it were me, I would keep the existing late model transmission setup and transfer the late model flexplate to the early model engine and all associated parts. Be sure to leave you late model exhaust system in place because of the differential being on the drivers side and you may need to swap out the late model oil pan onto the early model engine if exhaust clearance is an issue.

be sure to remove the tourque converter ring in the end of the crankshaft in the 360 out of the 79 before you put it in the truck
