... stock '88 GW.
Less than 1,000 miles ago, I had a locker put in. While the guy was in there, he rebuilt the entire rearend... and noticed that the t-case was about to come apart and removed and rebuilt that. He also "looked at" the transmission. He did not remove it. But he did fix the shift fork (?) and a leak (?).

I don't think he made up the t-case or the axle needs - the Jeep is now a lot quiter. I was getting some serious noises from the two.

Recently, my transmission has been hitting kind of hard when I shift from P to D, P to R, D to R and R to D. It feels like there's slop in the drivetrain? Also, the Jeep will roll about 2 feet before stopping after I put it park.

Given his lack of fear at moving a $150 locker install (I provided the locker) to a $1,500 2 week project, I don't think he would have hesitated to suggest more transmission work. And he would've seen all of the U-joints during the process... can't imagine he would've been afraid to throw a few new ones on the bill.

Any ideas before I take it to the tranny shop?

is it coming from the rear or the possibly the front. my front axle has a fair amount of slop init.

Yep. Check the t-case. Mine would drive for 20 minutes and then slip outta gear. She'd also roll in park. A"new" t-case got her on the road again...

BTW - I'm going to Pittsburgh this weekend...

Well if that's the case... I'm PISSED!!! I paid the guy in Richmond a *@$%ing lot of $$$ to fix my Jeep. Now I'm 600 miles away and I may have to pay someone else to do the same $#*@ing thing.

Start by replacing the U-joinst yourself. They cost about $10 each and only require some time and a 1/2" wrench. Or was it a 3/8"? Or maybe a 7/16". I hate when that happens (darn brain forgets stuff like that). Well, you get the point about how easy it is.

You also mentioned you had a locker installed. What kind is it? I don't know all of them but a lockright and a detriot both create a lot of (slop) in the drivetrian. Read your owners (users) manual befor freaking out. It should discribe the differant drivability characteristics.

With the drive shaft out I have a very small amount of play at the tcase yoke and maybe 1/8 of a revolution at the diff yoke. Any ideas or adjustments I can do on this, Clunk is really loud without carpet or insulation inside.

a certain amt of play is normal.the clunk,whilst alarming, is normal.what can be done is to check the end play at the pinion. there is a crush washer there that is used to adjust pinion play. this is assuming the u-joints, etc are ok. putting the rig in gear whilst the engine is on high idle doesnt help either :D relax, the one on the 83 clunked for 180k. the roll in park is normal too. as long as it takes up after a afoot or so

Manhattan, give me a call today or this weekend at 770.379.9224. I got a great tranny guy (been building for me for several years, and just finished my TF 727 for the Wagoneer) who can tell you if it's your tranny or something else. If it's the xfer case, I got a great guy also who can help. He builds all the xfer cases for the shops around atlanta, and for high performance applications. I'll be here for the rest of the day working on my rig.
