View Full Version : Another carb/intake question

I am still trying to get my carb/intake situation figured out (what I am going to use to replace my KIA MC 4350) and I started thinking....what I have now is the original manifold. It has two big holes in it. On top of that is a big spacer that has 4 holes in it (each hole coordinating with a barrell on the carb.) Why can't I just use a different spacer with the correct holes cut in it? For example, the stock spacer that comes under a Carter AFB...then I could jsut bolt this AFB that I have sitting around onto that and it would work right????

From what I have heard previously, it won't work, but why not? Somebody clue me in....I know I have to be overlooking something....I jsut got to thinking that when I go out looking at junkyards for a different intake manifold, I won't even know which one to look for!

One more question....did any FSJ years come with an intake manifold that works with Q-jets, or Edelbrocks, or Holleys? If so, which years?

Thanks again ;)

My 73 stock 4V AMC manifold accepted a 1405 Edelbrock just fine w/no adapters. The Qjet on my 72 AMC 4V manifold uses and adapter though. The mounting bolts between a stock MC/Holley carb and a Qjet aren't even remotely close.

quick question, -joe, when you say MC/Holley carb, do do you i assume you mean motorcraft right? I have a four barrel carb on my jeep, it had it when i got it. I figured it was after market cause it says Holly manufactured for Motorcraft on it. Is this a stock carb?

Yup that's what I meant. Holley built carbs for Ford under the Motorcraft badge and FSJ's used the 4v 4300/4350 and the 2v 2100/2150 versions as stock equipment.

It sounds like you have a 2 barell intake with a 4 barrell adapter on it. Is this right? Just get an edelbrock intake and be done with it, IMHO.

that 4 hole adapter plate is supposed to increase low end torque..........phil

The more I think of it the more I think that I do not have a 2v intake adapted to a 4v...it is the stock 401 intake and it has two LARGE holes in it that are oriented front to rear (if memory serves) so that the secondaries dump DIRECTLY into the manifold...

What I was asking is, since I am already using a "4 hole plate", wwhy can't I jsut use a different "4 hole plate" that is cut to the Carter AFB and be done with it?

There will be two large holes in the intake, but there will also be two small holes directly in front of them.

Ummm...now I am confused....
Are you telling me that the holes on the intake are exactly the same size and the primaries and secondaries on the carb? and that they are an exact fit? Becuase I was thinkning that the intake had two big holes in it...as in one on the left that fit under the left primary and the left secondary, and one on the right that fit the right primary and the right secondary...like I said, it has been a while since I been in there, but isn't that how it is? if so, then why can't any carb that fits the bolt pattern be bolted on in place of the MC 4350?

Also, what years of intake-donor should I be looking for to replace my crazy intake with a holley (or q-jet) freindly carb?

... Please correct me if I’m wrong . Jode I sent you some useable Holley carburetor numbers a little while back. The spread bores have a rectangular bolt pattern and these Holleys have a square bolt pattern the same as the MC4350. I had one of these Holleys on my 401 for a short while…

Carburetors are only a comic book trainning ground for those who would install TBI systems... :D :D

Good Luck and CUL ;) … ds..

If your intake had two oblong holes, side-by-side, then it's not a stock intake for a 4350 spreadbore carb, but rather for a 4300 squarebore carb.

So how did you get the Q-jet on there? Did the adaptor adapt the bolts too?

Yes. The aluminum adapter is made by Mr Gasket I think.

Did you?

This whole thing has me thoroughly confused...here is my current plan of attack....I have access to two intake manifolds currently on parts Jeeps....I am going to pray that one of them is the Holley style. Then I will install the old Carter AFB on the new intake and go from there. Unless, there is something in that line of logic that is incorrect. If so, feel free to let me know....
 :(

Then after all that is done and I am driving again, Iwill look into adapting the Q-jet to the manifold that I will have at that time....

It would be my opinion that you just bite the bullet and get yourself a NEW carb and a NEW or GOOD USED aluminum intake THAT MATCH and be done with it. That's what I did. I have a bone stock 360 in my wag that has 3.31 gears and it has an edlebrock intake and brand new holley vac secondary 600cfm carb on it and it gets 15.5 mpg on a regular basis. I couldn't beleive it at first either...but I've done the math countless times and it always comes up over 15.

Brand new carbureators are SO COOL! :)
