What the wee lad is saying in his most subtly way is there is no manufacture for rock sliders except you!

Desert Beast,

I like your rock sliders  . Do you mind if I rip off the idea and build some for my Wag?

I have all I need but the tubing (poor student type). I DO have some 1/16th (0.0625?) 1x1's, 1x2's, & 2x4's, 1x1 1/8 angle, and a bit of 1/8th and 1/4 plate. Old tractor crates I got for free... (Not enough quarter to box with, maybe reinforce?)
What would you do with that?

I was thinking about the same design as Desert Beast's. It's a good design to copy from. I drew something, but don't know how to post it.

4 body points with the 2x4's and maybe 1/4 gussets.
A length of two 1x2's welded together replacing the 1/4" square main rail (maybe with some angle to reinforce)
Another long 2x4 across the top held on with 4 or 5 more 6" 1x2's.
Then 1/8 sheet welded on the angled up piece for strength and sliding?

If the slider gets hit hard enough to buckle then I can replace it free, as long as the jeep's mostly ok. Theory here is quantity over quality to build up strength.

i personaly would go thicker than 1/16". but that might just be me, i like to overbuild things slightly. my sliders are all .188wall.

and for the record the above pic i posted of the rock sliders is not mine. or one that i built. i just got the pic from google.

these are the rocksliders/boatside on my jeep.

all I know is that .120 wall wont hold up on a rock without bending. prolly worse under a heavy fsj.http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/images/icons/icon4.gif

I did some calulations (Read: Hit the steel with a sledge hammer). 1/16 will not do. Even double welded and reinforced. Don't skimp, and do it right. As my friend commented: "You just made a damage multiplier."
The welds held, but the box just crumpled after 2 or 3 hits. Nice sharp bends to dig into the rocker pannels....

I guess this is for any other new guys that read this later. :)
