Well I pulled my engine last week to rebuild tor this spring and decided to put my front locker in too that hasbeen laying here for about 6months. So I cracked open my 60 and tore out the axles everything looks great no wear or tear. I put new u joints in and thought the locks splines look funny and just stuck them in to see how they fit. Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley!!! the axles were to big so I counted splines both are 30. I didnt lay the ring gear on I wished I had I think the guy gave me a 44?
anyone know how to syfer detroit part numbers 02496? beats me I have a email in to detroits tech dept.

Are you sure your axles are 30 spline? I think you should count them to be sure. My guess is you have 35 spline axles and a 30 spline detroit. Can't say as I have seem a 30 spline front Dana 60.

Well heres the deal My rear axle is 30 spline I put a 30 spline detroit in it. the front axle shafts are 30 spline so I ordered another 30 spine detroit to match the rear. gues what the front has 30 spline stub shafts and 35 spline main axles. I got these from the same dodge truck? is this common? to have two different splines on the same frontend or is it a dodge thing.

I thought all GM D60s were all like that up front.... 30 outer, 35 inner.

This is the norm. Unless you got a '94+ Dodge which I believe would have 32 spline inners. I think the old Fords (pre '78) have 30 spline inners. Most everything else should be 35 inner/30 outer unless someone swapped 35 spline outers

Yes the outers are 30 and inners are 35. Never go by outer shaft spline counts................as you have just learned :(

pmed you back. I have a stupid question but I do not want to dig out
my d60 to check. J20 d60's are they all 30 spline?
And will it work w/ a 5.13 ring gear? I assume so since you are using 4.56

Your J20 axle should be 30 spline. Not aware of any J20 D60's from 74 to the last one off the line to have anything else but. R&P will have no effect on axle spline count. ;)

Though it takes nothing to be 100% sure, 8 bolts and the axle slids out. ;)
