View Full Version : quick question on dana 18/20 gear swap

Hi all, it seems ive got a dana 18 laying around with one of those drum brake e-brakes, and i also have a ??spline dana 20(mated to a th400 from an old jeep i.e. bop pattern) my question is can i swap the gears from the 18 and install them into the 20 and give the 20 the lower range? im not sure if my 20 is a single speed or not, dont know how to tell really. also if anyone has any info online about it it would be greatly appreciated.

in a word- no.

while it is possible to swap dana 18 gears into a dana 20 housing,there is alittle more to it.

in order for the gears to be swappable,the 18 in question needs to be of the 1.25" intermediate shaft variety,and in order to keep it a dana 20 youll also need the upper slider from a 2.46 bronco dana 20.

it is possible to swap the 18 gears without the bronco upper slider and configure the case like an 18.youll swap the 18s gears,shift tower,tailsahft housing,etc. into the 20 housing and basically what youve done is manufacture your own "large hole" dana 18 that will swap onto a t18,t150,or other manual tranny.

the prollem you will have in swapping this case onto a factory th400/d20 adapter and tailsahft is the th400s oddball 15 spline tailshhaft. there does not exist an input gear that will work with a 2.46 low range d18 or 20 with 15 internal splines to fit the th400 tailshaft. :(

you can configure a dana 20 into an 18 that will bolt to the th400,but youll have to use all the th400 d20s gears,so youre left with the same low range as the d20 and now the case is not nearly as strong,so there are not alot of good reasons to do it.

i used to build large hole 18s out of a 20 case and 18 guts to run behind my t18. ive also done a couple 2.46 conversions with bronco gears,so ive been inside this case quite a bit.

my plan is to run it behind a jeep t-4 that was originally mated to a d300, granted itd probably be easier just to find another d300. i only have the case and intermidiate shaft to output guts, dont have the "bull gear" thing, so i thought i could just swap what i had into the d20 and be done with it.

oh well anyone got a d300 they want to trade for a d20 and a d18 with the drum brake attachement?
