Gentlemen, the snow has arrived here in the great frozen north, and my 85GW (stock) does not want to go into 4x4 mode. (Snow, gentlemen, is why the jeep gods gave us 4 wheel drive). What couuld have gone wrong over the summer?
thank you in advance for your suggestions - I enjoy this forum immensely.

Claw,

Sorry to hear the bad news first of all... and second, I don't miss the white stuff all that much. It was 76 hear today (had shorts on under my coveralls while workin' on the rig)

Next, you should add details of your rig to your signature so people will know what model and type equipment you are dealing with.

I can't really help you with your dilema cuz I have a 78... beast of a different era.... Someone will be around just wait....

Hmmn, lessee. 85wag,vacuuume shifted 229? (thats a u for u Rudy).total wild a** guess, but lookat the vacuum lines going to front diff and the transfer case. betcha the tubing has rotted out. it happened on my 83+ 84 wags and Coley had the same trouble a few weeks back. look for 3 steel lines glommed together running underneath the left exhaust manifold. what i did was to replace them with vacuum hose attached to the fenderwell. search the tech section for tips. if its what i think it it is you can prolly fix it for lessen 10$. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif good luck. post your findings to add to the knowledge pool.

The snow is coming here in Iowa too. It definitly what the Jeep Gods made them for. My guess too is that it is most likely a vacumn problem.

My 84 wouldn't shift into 4wd this summer. I traced it down to the vacuum motor that is mounted by the transfer case. When I pulled it out I could barely move it back and forth.
I soaked the thing inside and out with some light oil while working the center linkage back and forth. After a while it would move smooth as silk. I installed it and it worked like new. Just one of the possibilities you could check. Good Luck! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

1st thing id do is check for vaccum at the motor.if none check for it at the switch, and start tracing lines.

2nd,disconnect the motor from the mode rod.if the motor moves mack and forth, try and move the mode lever with a big srewdriver, pair of channel lockes,a big stick, etc. if ya cant move the lever by had,you may have internal troubles. jack up a front wheel and spin it as you try and engauge the lever. if it wont move, take it to tranny shop or pull it for further diagnosis.

in 85 you should not have a vacuum disconnect on the axle.id be willing to bet youve got a simple vaccum line or shift motor problem. if your xfer is full of clean mercron III tranny fluid, prolly not much as happened to it over summer.
