View Full Version : Frt D60 & now, rear D70 Score...
Elliott

This '83 3x3 crew cab just showed up at a yard I've been prowling looking for hydroboosts and I scored the D60 and 32 spline 205 for a price that'l make you sick... the 205 was $75 if that gives you a clue.
I was fixing to do some lighter axles in my drivetrainless '80 project, but it looks to be going towards a passenger drop, will fit with hummer beadlocks... and hopefully a Sportside bed. I'd rather have the driver's drop Ford DRW D60, but what am I gonna do? If anyone has one local that wants to trade let me know.
I've got a couple DRW pickup D70s located, hopefully I can get one dirt cheap to match this score.
Edit... Found a matching '83 DRW D70 and posted the pic & WMS on page 2.

Must be nice to have places to score the parts I need and cheap too.
That is just the front end I need for my project. What gear ratio is it ?
And would you want to get rid of it .

I'd say I just walked into it, but I've been walking a lot of yards and making the rounds. I don't know what the gear ratio is yet 'cause the tag was only 1/2 there and we've got a nasty freezing rain thing happening for the next couple days.
Pete, they told me to pull the t-case, so yeah the adaptor had to come with it.:D It is missing the o-ring I think.
harleykeith2005, I'd get rid of the axle... but only in exchange for a frt DRW D60 from a '78-'79 Ford.

I too would be envious except I have already made plans to change Crom to a driver's side drop.:dancingbanana:

I snagged a nice MC/HB also:) It's from a '88 Powerstroke 2wd F450 with 14,500 GVWR. The boost units are valved consistent with GVWR so this one should have some serious stopping power. The rod is just ~1" longer then what will fit the FSJ with the aluminum firewall block and the rod hole is 3/4" so I'll work with that end of it and put a Astro van backing plate on it.
The reason I've been doing so much prowling hasn't been to spend $, so scoring these cheap was a super reward, but I'm trying to find the elusive GM HB that used a grommet to hold the pushrod in rather then the typical staked rods. This would allow us to just swap in a replacement rod and Astro van plate... at this point I can't say they are any easier to find then the early Caddy units though... they were only used in a limited number of rigs.

One question about the ford unit. Have you checked the hose connections to make sure your hoses fit? Only reason I ask is because I have a ford boost unit out of a 'stang cobra, and although it has the O-ring fittings, the thread size is diffrent (my guess is its standard and not metric) I dont know if its only a mustang thing, or if all ford units are like this. Check and let me know what ya find.

I see what you are saying, there is a minor difference. The unit has o-ring fittings. Both hose sizes are 3/8". The input and pressure hose nuts are both the same size and similar to the 90's GM Astro van and my H1 booster pressure hose nuts at 5/8" (or probably, more accurately 16mm). The input hose nuts on the Astro or H1 are 18mm.

OK, I was wrong... I thought 1/2 the ratio tag was missing so thought maybe I'd check to see if at least some of the numbers were on it and found the tag is just shorter than I had expected. :)

Glad you got an ok deal from the junk nazis. I am eyeballing a whole k30; has not sold for a month 6.2 th400 np205 ect. Diesel runs; poorly. Don't want to destroy a rust free truck though.
So when you bringin it over?:p Is that going under your blue truck?

Yep, it's going under the blue truck (my other blue truck, the '80 swb). Now I'm prowling for a dirt cheapo wide D70 in 4:10 since the yard I got the 60 from thought they'd see how much I'd pay for the matching 70. Ferndale's a haul from here... not likely to make it back up there.:D

Checked through a couple places for prices and dragged out this '83 Chevy DRW D70 pickup axle for $25....:D ok, $27.06 with tax.
WMS is 74", I couldn't find the tag and didn't have much time before closing so I figured if I missed on the ratio being a 4:10 I can live with that at this price.:)

Fine find there Elliott.
Do that again and we ban you for life

I don't personally know the owners, but I'm getting too...
Actually, the one yard only charges $25 for a rear axle if you pull it (which was no fun in the swamp of a yard they have in this weather currently). There was another DRW pickup D70 w/4.10:1 sitting on a rack, but since it'd been pulled they wanted $150 for it. If mine turns out not to be a 4.10 I'll see if they'll swap with me.
We've had three days of freezing rain and lots of wrecks so there should be some more good stuff coming:thumbsup:
Maybe I should play the lottery this month. I had a deadbeat bidder on a pto/pump that gave me lots of crap/never paid up so I relisted the item and just closed the auction at $100 more than the deadbeat had it for.:)
The next quest won't be so easy I'm afraid, we'll see... Sportside bed for my '80 truck that's gettin' the dually axle/Hummer beadlock treatment. Have to sell a bunch more parts to afford that when it comes up though.

I'm sure with the luck you've had lately, be careful you don't trip walking out your front door.........you might fall and bang your head on a sportside bed that just fell out of the sky.
Must be nice. Axle wise that is.

you get it for $75 bucks and whine about an O-ring??? STFU Mr. wheel & deal. LOL
If you don't end up with 4.10's in the 70, i have a what came in my axle, I have not counted the teeth yet. I'm not sure what ratio it is, but if they are 4.10's, i'll hook you up. I am running this lovely 4.56/detroit set I got from pascal, so I dont need the old ones. I'll try to look for a tag sometime, I havent rebuilt the axle and put in the locker yet, i've been busy trying not to flunk out of school, lol.

Elliott, if you feel like making a couple of bucks I would probably buy some parts off of ya if you find some parts I can use while you're searching. My stuff would be easier I would think. I'm installing 80 Wag axles in my YJ. Also have TF727 and NP208 from the Wag in the YJ. Since it's a trailer queen/trail rig, I'll be looking for spare parts. I have a spare 208 and a spare D44 front axle.
A spare AMC20 would be nice. Mostly for shafts.
D44 shafts or other parts. Don't need another full axle.
A TF727 would be cool, I'd like to rebuild one and see if I can do it.
Some black steel wheels-6 bolt Wag
I'm down the road a little bit, in Weatherford. I don't get out to the yards much. Tried some in FW and Dallas, but unless you know what to look for, there is no help from the people there. Give me a shout if you see stuff like that and I'll throw in some extra $ for finders fee. Sound decent?
Elliott

Where I've been getting deals, they don't have any Jeeps in the yards. The yards with Jeeps are more expensice save one. I'll shoot you a pm.

LOL, being Alaskan this is pretty warm... and the only time of year I can do anything outside and not break a sweat. I had a month off from grad school FINALLY, and boy did it feel great to get out and bird dog some great stuff. I'm glad to have a tractor to move these axles around or I'd be hurting for certin'. Thanks for the offer Janie, if you keep an eye out for a killer deal on a Sportside/Thriftside bed (even without fenders) and don't snag it yourself let me know as there is an off chance I may have some $ at the time.:D

I hear that very loud Elliott! Brutus paid $18 a piece for spring hangers from Sky. I just got enough 3" x 5" tubing to make 8 of them myself for $7. :D It feels really good finding what you want in a junkyard or scrap yard for cheap. You just have to look.
