View Full Version : Choke plate won't open fully

Checking my carburetor, I noticed that the choke is not opening fully when warmed up. Behind the vacuum, there is a screw, which I turned both ways and got NO response. It seems that the "arm or linkage arm" from the vacuum to the choke plate is TOO LONG. Is there a special tool that can be used to kinda crimp the arm to make it shorter?
Has anyone else had this on a rebuilt motorcraft 2150? This is the second AdvancedAuto rebuilt carb to be on my 1990 GW. I would rather adjust if possible, than replace again./

And because it is not opening, I guess, this is the reason I cannot get into double figure mpg. Stuck at 8 mpg even with all my textbook upgrades

If I remember correctly you can adjust that. First make sure nothing is bound up..look at the linkages for the choke and squirt with some lube or something and make sure they are all moving correctly...If everything seems to move freely try adjusting by finding a black circular pod like housing with a wire going to it. there should be three screws around it. loosen the screws and turn it a little toward the lean direction...keep adjusting until it open when hot!

Thanks mtn goat. I will try that as well. I don't remember seeing the black housing. Just the screw behind the vacuum.
You have never heard of somebody having to bend the linkage then?
You have never heard of somebody having to bend the linkage then?TOTALLY! When I got a new manifold and Rochester carb for my 70...it didn't come with a linkage for it. All I did was make my linkage out of an old clothes hanger. This was for a manual choke.....but feel free to bend the linkage.

You need to adjust the choke spring. On the right side of the carb there is a black circular plastic thing. Its the chok spring's housing. There are three screw that hold it in place. Unfortunately, the screw are anti-tamper screws which need to be drilled out or unscrewed with plyers. After they are out, normal machine screws will thread in. Once all the screws are loose, turn the housing on direction or the other until the choke is fully open when the truck is warmed up.
Better yet, replace the choke spring. They wear out and cause your exact symptom

I couldn't agree more. Get it warm and then adjust the choke by turning the choke spring housing.

Ditto... adjust the shoke spring housing by turning it until your butterfly is wide open when warm..

Sweet. Thank you guys. I am glad that I put off my idea of a fix (fished instead) until the wisdom this rockin website came through.
Man, can you imagine if there was a company that had employees that shared information as effectively as ifsja'ers? Could conquer the world with any product or service.
