When backing up and turning or pulling forward and turning, i.e. parking, I get what sounds like tire rub from the rear of my 87 GW. On further inspection there are no signs of rubbing on the tire or frame components.
The whole jeep has "the sag" so a new set of leafs are on there way (with 2" lift of course). But I'm not sure that is the problem.
I am not rear end savy so do I just suck it up and take it to a dealer who "knows" jeeps or has anyone else had this problem and knows of the solution?

thanks for you input.

Todd,

I checked the e-brake cable...no signs of wear. My worst fear is that the rear end is going away, but the sound is not constant, some times I can't reproduce the sound.

would a bearing make the same sound if it was going out?

fender, you may have something that is rare in Jeeps  Working self adjusting rear brakes. As you said, when backing up then going forward.
Brake adjusters only work when stopping in reverse. Maybe there working to good ;)

Graham,

I'll pull the tires this week and give the adjusters the once over. Haynes manual here I come. I'll keep you posted on my findings.

Update:

I pulled the drums off the rear this weekend and there are no signs of the adjusters over adjusting. The brakes have normal wear for their age and there are no grooves on the drums. all the parts look ok.
The passenger side wheel has about 1/8 of an inch of rotational play, the driver side wheel about 1/4 of inch of rotational play. this was done with the opposite wheel on the ground.
when rotating the driver side rear wheel, I can hear movement in the transfer case, which I assume is normal.
Where do I go from here...I am so close to throwing in the towel and giving it to the dealer!!!

Everything in the drive system is stock, so unless came out of the factory that way then no.
Being a rear end novice...no jokes please...what's the easiest way to check spindles, and what would I be looking for?

check the oil, if have small metal particles maybe that is, introduce (whit carefull) your finger in the level hole then check if your finger have litle brilliant particles,
but way not take off the cover and check at time change the oil, this job only take 1 or 2 hours, recomended oil Mobillube HD 85w-140 (can be used on hypoydal gears and the service factor is better than the green oil 140)
