Yes, it's me again...hahaha. I've got a 83 J-10 with a 360, automatic with Selec-Trac. According to the owner's manual, the way to engage the low range, is to put the tranny in neutral, then move the transfer case lever into low range...but when I do this, it grinds like crazy. So far, I've had to shut the engine off everytime I want to go into low range....any ideas on this one?

The Selec-Trac can be a real PITA sometimes. Consider these suggestions:

1- With the truck in neutral and rolling forward slowly (1-3 mph) shift the range lever (on floor) deliberately and quickly upward to the 4-LO position

2- Check your fluid levels in the X-case. If it's not full, drain and fill with new ATF.

3- Check your linkage on the mode and range rods. This was a problem that I recently had. I adjusted the mode rod to 5.9" and the range rod to 1" from the floor in 4-HI.

4- Be sure that your in 4-HI before you do the shift. If you aren't in 4-HI, the X-case will not permit you to enter 4-LO. Look at you vacum motor for the X-case. If the rod from the vacum motor is retracted and attached to the mode rod, you are in 4-HI. You can also check to see if you are in 4-HI by testing out in loose gravel or mud if traction is going to the front wheels

Good Luck!
