Aloha to everybody, very informative board here! Thanks for all the info regarding my new rig!
I've been a long time wheeler/jeeper but finally got into the FSJ. I just recently bought an 89 GW, all stock, no rust.
I recently started lifiting it and have yet to complete it to my satisfaction. 4" of lift so far but I plan to do a SOA and have my flat top's and Sky arms on order. I'm still debating about the shackle flip kit from TT's Fabworks.
Day I brought it home.

4" lift up front
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/OahuJeepers/uplandhawaii/HPIM0252.jpg
3.5" in rear but it sits too low and I'm going to rebuild my leaf pack or add a small block.

Completed 4" lift.

The 31's were to small for my tastes so I trimmed the fenders 3" all around and tossed on my 33" boggers. Stock rims are 15X7 with 4"bs, my series 97 are 16X10 with 4.5" BS.
Right now the G. waggy is lifted 4" with 3" fender trim. As soon as my parts arrive I'll be doing a SOA and total height should be around 10-11" of lift. I plan to run 35 BFG MT's. I already have new 4.88 gears and carriers waiting to be installed with a detroit in the rear and possibly a locker up front as well. I plan to install a NP231 and switch to part time hubs. Wish I could find a jeep NP208 but no dice in Hawaii!:(

Thanks,
I plan to pull the wood trim off and repaint her. I still need to add some 3/8" round bar to the fender lips so I'll do that and whatever else body work I find, then give her a decent paint job. For Hawaii it was rare to find the body is rust free, only a large dent in the rear pass. quarter panel to fix. Looking to go with bright yellow.:D

Nice ride, but I think 35's will look too small with that much lift, especially considering the fender trimming you've done.
Plenty functional, but might look a little odd.

Think 37's may fit better? I have the 35's now so once I get the height I want I'll take a look and see how it flexes off road. With some bumpstops I'm sure I could run 37's and no problems with hitting the sheet metal.

Had a chance to do more work on the GW. Swapped in a chevy D44 along with a beefed D300 with 32 spline output and twin sticks.
Raised hi-steer arms. I'm also going to run hydro assist with this setup.

Chevy SF 14 bolt for the rear, waiting on my shackle flip and 63" springs.

If it sits too high I'll rebuild the spring packs and get her down some. I was planning to run 35's but may go with 37's.

I just got back from the big Island and noticed two things while I was there. First- there just weren't many FSJ's at all- a very rare sight. Second- seems like everyone was running swamper/boggers especially on the Kona coast??? Congrats on the score and keep the pics coming.

Good observation! 90% of the trucks you see are pavement pounders. All show, half of the time I can score a good deal on tires and rims because the street queens get tired of all the noise and vibration from the swampers.;) The FSJ's are definitely not a popular rig to build here on the islands. If you can find them you can get them for a song. You'll see more yota's,jeeps, zuks for rocks and chevy's and fords for the mud crowd.
You should have pm'd me I would have hosted a ride for you and taken you out into the old lava fields out Kona side.
I've met and shared rides with several visiting members from sites I am a memeber of.
Thats an open invitation to any visiting wheeler!

Got my temporary steering in place, 1" schedule 80 with Chevy TRE's and drag link ends welded in. When I get ready to run it I'm going to run 1" schedule 80 again but with weld in tube adapters for chevy 1 ton tre's(1" x18 tpi).
On my tie rod/drag link do you thing I need to run a drop pitman arm to get a flatter angle?

I got an unexpected visit from this guy, a Hawaiian Hawk or in hawaiian 'Io (pronounced-eeeo). He sat on my fence for a bout 20 minutes watching me work on the waggy.

I began my rear shackle flip the other day using what I thought was a used RB kit I bought online. I encountered some problems with fitment and after comparing the parts to pictures from Tadsal's instructions(thanks again Tad!) it seems its not an RB kit at all. The hangers that I bought are a 1/4" too narrow, but looked to be well made. They didn't fit flush within the stock bracket. I sent them back and got a refund(minus shipping:mad: )
So plan "B", reuse front hangers from another GW. The rear is tacked in place and almost done. My rear springs are flat, is that how they should be after the shackle flip?

Rear is done, shackles are set at 60*. Slight rake toward front, I think 35's will look good on it. I'll be able to stuff them with no rubbing.

Sitting on 35's. With the SOA and previous 3-4" lift I'm guessing it sits at about 9-10" of lift, maybe a little less.
Looks good on 35's, I have a SF 14 bolt ready to bolt in(axle in the rear w/small tires) Lots of room to flex and fills the wells just right IMO.
Almost completed, need to finalize my hi-steer and make a new square drive shaft and do some interior work. Should be ready for summer time wheeling!:D

Aloha Tad! I bought your 44 perches, its on the jeep's stock 44 that I'm using on my SAS Tahoe project once the jeep is completed. I also had the RB shackle flip but it was actually a mix of your kit and someone elses stuff. So I ended going another route, but from your service and perches I can definitely say you'll get my business for sure! I'm happy with the parts I bought!
Stafford,
I remember the perches in February and the instructions in April.
Glad you got it worked out, but I am concerned about the mix and match of parts, I do not want it to happen to someone else.
Sending you an email.
Thanks,

Finally got around to installing the SF 14 bolt, track width looks good and I won't need to run the wheel spacers I bought. I did move the axle back 1.5" using Ruff Stuff anti-wrap perches. Pinion angle looks good and is set to what the factory 44 was at.
I need to buy new u-bolts since I had new ones made for use with the D44 and not the 14. You can see the redneck use of improper u-bolts to hold the axle in place temporarly!http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif

Installed the D300 today, I'm going to have clearance issues on the cross member(which I expected) but it also looks like I will be either hitting the tranny pan or real close. Engine and tranny are the stock 360/727.
I'm running a SOA with a 2-3" lift spring up front, anyone know why its so tight on the tranny clearence? I thought with a 4-6" lift I would be clear.

Mocked up the front drive shaft. This is the 360/727/D300 set up with Chevy D44 and SOA with 2-3" lift leaf pack.
Drive shaft is close but doable. Cross member is in the way. Once I build a new one I should be able to get another 1" or so clearance on the shaft to pan. The driveshaft is the stock GW shaft with the CV being replaced with a u-joint yoke. The drive shaft is installed backward's for now till I can cut and weld the new yoke on. If I can get it to work I'm also going to make a square driveshaft like I had in my XJ to replace the front shaft.
No way this would fit without a lift!

Thanks, I've been working on it during my free time and I'm getting close to being done.
I bought the D300 out of a another jeep, bolts right in the only thing is the clearance issues and you need a passenger drop axle.

what kind of clearance issues?
You'll have problems clearing the crossmember with the shaft. It'll hit and it needs to be notched or rebuilt. Without any lift this swap will not work. I must be around 8" of lift up front and you can see by the pics its still close. I need to extend my bumpstop to prevent the shaft from hitting the tranny pan.

Got a little more done, rear drive shaft is in place. Swapped out the SF 14bolt/D44 for a lower geared set of 10/12 bolt with 4.56's detroit in the rear and mini spool up front. Traded the 44/SF14 for a D60/HO72 eaton. Eventually these will end up being rebuilt and put under the waggy.:D
