I have a friend with the nicest 67 wag. He has a 327 V8 and there is no timing flag on the timing cover. Not even a casting with a bolt hole to attach one. I know how to time by advancing till it pings, but we were hoping to pinpoint a better starting point. Any Rambler nuts out there that may know how we can time this thing??? Why is there no timing flag?? Thanks for any help....

Al, there should be a pin sticking out from the timing cover near the fuel pump side. The timing marks TDC/5*/10* etc are cut into the dampner. Prolly have to put some emery cloth on the dampner to expose the cuts.

Thanks for your reply Joe. I got your PM with the pic at home. I printed it out and headed over to my friends house to compare. His timing cover has no pin. Heres a pic... http://www.fullsizejeeps.com/jeeps/files//wag 327 timing cover.JPG It must be a real early cover or something. He has the three grooves in the dampener but thats all. I guess we will have to time it by the seat of our pants. I did put a timing light on it and it lit up the marks right where the pin is supposed to be, but no pin. Thanks for the reply. I'll see what we can do....Kaiserjeeps...(Al)...

I'll look at mine this pm and tell you what I see, I know I set the timing on it last year. Will also look in my vintage Chilton's for the marks.

another good way to time something is to do it by vaccuum. you should keep advancing until your reach peak vacuum, then back it off 1 in/HG.

you should have a reading between 15-25(vacuum). this will almost always put you within 1 degree of the timing.

Cool LRRH... I didn't know that... Have vacuum guage will travel.. I'll head over there and give it a try. Between the pinging method and vacuum, I am sure we will find a good compromise setting.
Man this list is great!........Kaiserjeeps...(Al)...
