View Full Version : TBI guys - where did you put your IAT sensor?

I was thinking of putting my Intake Air Temperature sensor in the 3/4" thread directly behind the TBI. When I unscrewed the plug that was there, it looked like it had a little bit of oil on it - I would imagine this is NOT the best place for this sensor? Where did you guys put it?

Also, where is the best place for the coolant sensor? I was thinking the thread on the thermostat housing looks good.

This is a Big Block TBI going to an Edelbrock Performer via Trans Dapt Big Block adapter (couldn't find one by Holley).

neither of my systems used the intake air temp sensor.

I removed the yellow cto on the right front of the intake for the coolant temp sensor and rerouted the vacuum lines but the thermostat housing is probably ok too - just may take longer to get into the closed loop mode.

If you are running a standard carb-type air cleaner, simply mount it in the base. Or, if you have a large enough hole somewhere on your intake manifold, it can be mounted there. The sensor just needs to be somewhere where it will have air flowing over it. The intake air sensor just compensates for air density...without it, you can have issues going between hot and cold climates, or with changes in altitude.

If I read between the lines this is what I think you want.
There were a few GM applictions that used a intake air temp unit, but those ECU/CPU/.. do not have the support that the XXX7747 GM truck ECU has, so I assume you are talking about coolent temp, rather than inlet temp sensor.
Do not use the thermostat housing as a mount point, it will not read correctly during warm up as there is little to no coolent flow in that area while the stat is closed. I am using the hole where the CTO valve was just to the passanger side from the stat.

Oops, I'm so dumb...DUH! Ok, I'll mount mine there. I don't know why I figured that I might need that CTO some day...

Oh, and I should have mentioned that I am going to be using a MegaSquirt controller, which requires an IAT sensor. The hole behind the throttle body is not for coolant; it seems to be some sort of air passage, but since I found what looked like oil residue in there, I think I'll mount the IAT sensor somewhere in the air cleaner. Thanks a lot!

OK, Search out which GM (mostly maybe all cars ??) used a air temp sensor, I have a GM air cleaner from a 89(??) caprice with a air temp sensor in it, looks like all you need to do is punch a correct size hole in the air cleaner housing and pop it in, as it has built in clips. (BTW it is on the throttle body side of the air cleaner element)

Looks almost like the one here
