View Full Version : Coated the interior;speaker question

My project took on a life of it's own.
I started Friday afternoon thinking I could get the cargo area stripped and ready for paint. Along the way I found some rust, stripped a little carpet, found some mud and slowly made my way closer to the front of the Jeep. By Saturday night I had somehow rationalized stripping the interior to nothing more then a few wires and a dash panel:confused:. So I figured why stop? I prepped the entire interior for paint, went to the hardware store to get some paint while the interior dried after it's bath. I somehow got dupped into buying this Dupli-Color truck bed coating and figured why the he!! not. This project started harmless enough and has somehow turned into me gutting and coating the interior. It's a little scary but now that I see the finished product...Man is it sexy:cool: . I'll post some pics later.
Speaker questions:
I re-made the rear access panels out of steel cause my old ones were shot and I mounted some 6x9's in em. I want to move the speakers higher so I can spray out the interior of the Jeep without getting my speakers wet and destroying the cones. Up until now I've been removing them, this is getting old. Does anyone have any interesting ideas for relocaing the speakers higher up. Obviously I can make a box and mount the box to the ceiling but I'm looking for other ideas.

You can buy marine speakers but they are a little pricey........you can get them wet without a problem, I am looking at this right now as I am finishing my choptop cherokee......

Doesn't Bose have water resistant and water proof speakers? I know, seems silly putting such nice speakers inside a rolling tin can... Another idea is to put the speakers in an ammo box (underneath the lid). When hose time comes, close and lock the lid and spray away!

I worry more about something getting poked through them than water damage. I'm sure it's not recommended, but I have always run regular speakers in my boats, I'm to cheap to pay for marine. My boat has the speakers mounted in the seat seat bottoms, a few inches off the floor. I clean the boat out with a hose on a regular basis, and when we are out on the water, they always get wet. I always buy ones made with plastic, (not paper). I recommend installing mesh grills instead these modern open face ones to prevent physical damage. Current set has been in there since 2001, and I took them out of my old boat to put them in this one. Can't see why they wouldn't hold up even better in a cargo area. Bose, Forsgate, Jensen, about anyone do make marine speakers these days, buy ya, pricey.
If you're thinking of relocating, one thing I'm considering using a couple of removable, full range, truck speaker boxes and running extra length of speaker cable in the back, (or even better, installing plug in jacks in the panels), so I can put them out on the tailgate when camping, or remove them when they are in the way, or cleaning.
Can't wait to see how your project comes out.

Sounds like a great start. Just one question...did you paint/ primer/ seal any bare metal before putting the bed liner stuff down?
If not just keep an eye on those areas. I have seen rust form under the bed liner material where there was bare metal.
Good luck on the build and let me be the first to post :worthless:

I like the idea of mounting speaker plugs in the panels and just leaving loose speakers in the back that I can move around as needed. I'll probably build a base box that I can set the speakers into so they don't slide around while I'm flingin the Jeep around corners.
I sanded and washed the floorboards before I sprayed in the bedliner but I didn't spray any primer or coating or even antirust on the bare metal. I suppose I should have but the guy at the parts store said the bed liner should have a sealant in it that would help encapsulate the rust and stop it. there was some real bad rust spots where the wheel well met the bed floor. I'll have to cut that out and replace and then recoat when I figure my welder out.
thanks for the suggestions

what kind of speakers do you have? are they aftermarket or stock?
most aftermarket speakers that are not a pulp cone will hold up fine with mild water spash, just don't run the speaker until it is completely dry to keep or you will be risking a short or damage to the speaker. also if it has an exposed tweeter be sure not to hit it directly with water (spashes are fine) as it is most likely silk and will damage with little pressure.

I have a pair of alpine (i think) 6x9s in the doors and completly submerged my speakers for more than 20 min and they still work fine. Als right the new poly (whatever it is) dont seem to mind water.

I haven't coated my tailgate or my interior side panels yet cause I needed to get the Jeep on the road ASAP because the snow is on it's way. you can see how I mounted the speakers in these pics also. I like the location of the speakers except it's not very functional. the panels rattle and vibrate a lot and the speakers are susceptible to damage where they're at right now. This is why I want to relocate them up higher.
sorry if you were denied access to the photo's. I had to set the permissions on em and Yahoo photo decided to be difficult.

Dupli-Color truck bed coating.
Time will tell if I made a huge mistake by not laying down primer or sealing the metal first.
I plan on using this under the truck also once I get to cleaning and coating the undercarriage.

I did the same to mine but just bought cheap 20.00 road master speakers cause I know they will get junked after a few times off hta road. I used the Mar-Hyde spray in a spray can. It looks great but in the texas heat it tends to get a little "GUMMY" so I am gonna put down the replacement rubber flooring over it. It should insulate it great.
LOOKS GREAT
