This weekend my 90 GW windshield cracked for no apparent reason. Is there a problem with body flex in in these trucks. I have not been offroading but some of the streets in Manhatten are pretty rough. Any one else experience this? I did a search and nothing similar turned up.
Thanks

I just had my windshield crack frm the bottom all the way to the top. Usually a rock chip and sudden change in temp will start the chip to running. That is what happened to mine. I had a small rock chip and it has been very cold here, when defroster was turned on it cracked. I doubt body flex would do it, that is a lot of rubber seal there.

I think it's more a combination of the glass being so big, and the age of the glass. From what I've seen FSJ's with cracked windshields seem to be the norm.
4 of the 6 that I've had, have cracked windshields. New windshields are still available, but cost about $200, not a lot as windshields go, but still a chunk of change.

Body flex keeps my windshield gasket from sealing, but It hasn't made the glass crack.

I had a rock chip in my windshield and when I had my carpets steam cleaned, my windshield cracked.

as beefy as these things are, i think body flex is almost nil.
btw, where in nyc are you? i grew up in the village, on 3rd street. (toid and broadway)

My windshield is cracked....and it's still cracked....and I imagine it'll still be cracked a year from now. LOL. Any of you guys that's ever wrestled with a big windshield in a rubber gasket with that big stainless steel trim piece in it knows what I'm talkin about. I'd rather vomit coathangers than attempt to change mine out.

Mine wasn't that bad, but I never did put the chrome pieces back on. I screwed up putting the rear one in though. I put the seal in backwards, so when I was pulling on the rope, I tore some of the seal.

There were no chips that I was aware of... but the temp here did a nose dive and maybe there was some small flaw that I had not noticed. Or just another GW idiosyncronicity. smile.gif
I took it to a safelite shop and they swapped it out for $325. Ouchie! but better than doing it in my unheated garage, and it is warrenteed for as long as I own it against leaks and stress cracks.
SpruceMoose, I am in Chinatown below Canal on Mulberry. My first place in NYC was in the East Village on 5th between C and D, in '92 it was a challenging place to live but you gotta love it.
Anyway thanks everyone for all the input.

Actually, these aren't hard to get out at all. There's a lock built into the gasket that you can undo, and the windshield will all but fall out. I paid $40 at a pick and pull, and another $50 to have it installed. It lasted about 2 years. I'll probably go new this time.

Just did it a few weeks ago, $40 for a used windshield and lots of dish soap and I was done in an hour. That locking weatherstrip makes it really easy to do!

what did you guys use for weatherstripping/window seal? I had a couple used ones laying around (I had both the front and the back), but I was wondering where you guys got yours/if you got it new.
