Your t-case is either the D20 or the D21. I have the C18-15-24 cast into the side of my D20 case. The second numbers are a little different though so I am assuming that that is the date made, September 13th, 1963. I am pretty sure it is an D20 because it is attached to a TH400. If it was attached to a AS-8F then it would have been a D21. What engine you have?

edit: The TH400/D20 combo is a VERY good combo in my opinion. I am trying to get back to the this sort of. I am going to replace the D20 with a D18 in a D20 case.

A 2 speed auto? You have a problem with that tranny. I have heard of such a thing. You might want to post that problem in a new topic.

Porkchop, My son informed me he can feel it shift 3 times but the column indicator only has 2 speeds. The former owner said the steering column came from a chrysler new yorker 74, maybe he put the wrong indicator on. Its my son's truck I don't drive it much, We have only had it for 3 months. I am finding out new problems all the time , guess thats why it was sold at such a good price

This is very interesting. Why does it say Hydromatic instead of TurboHydromatic. Could it be something like the old Buick Dyna-flow used until 61 or 62? What about the old 50's era Olds Hydromatic (4spd.)??? Also I didn't think GM built the TH400 until 65 or 66. The 63 and 64 Chev Supersports were 2spd powerglides. The earliest 3spd auto I have ever seen from Chevrolet was a 66 Big Block. I remember seeing something about early 60's GMC trucks having a 3spd auto just for GMC, (if you got the Chev you got a powerglide). I sure would like to know what that thing is, coach.

my truck has the TH400/D20 combo and it's beef. I don't know if i got you right but my truck has P,R,N,D,2,1. is that what you meen. furthermore if I'm correct about this all TH400's came with a D20 until they changed to The torque flight 727. then the T-case changed.

OK, porchpiggy, I am positive that it is a TH400. My TH400 only says Hydromatic GM on it also. It is also matted to a 360 which some one either put in or the year of the frame is not what they said it was when he bought it.

Coach, look at the engine mounts and look to see if they are original or not.

dweezle, they started using the TH400 in 65 and used it up until 79. It came with either the D20 or the QT. The D20 combo was used a lot in the trucks as to where the QT was used in the wags and cheros and also the CJ's. They switch to the TF727 in 1980.

No they are not original mounts look like chevy mounts. Looked all over the tranny, can't find any other markings. Took it out on my road last night when in low I felt it shift into second without me shifting it. When I dropped the shifter down it went into lower gear. Could the linkage be set wrong

The TH400 is vacum shifted. Is there a vacum line that goes from the intake to the tranny?

coach-frank

Yes there is a vaccum line from the intake to the tranny and I just drove it it shifts twice which means three gears but the gear shift only has two shifts, will shift from low to second on the lowest column mark' must shift again on column to get to drive. Put it in drive will shift twice which means three gears. Must be a 400

The TH400/D20 combo was from late 65 to 72. Frm 73-79 if it had a TH400 it'd have the BW/QT x-case. In 80 all FSJ's went to NP x-case and Chrysler AT's.
