I had some problems with my Q-jet swap. I got all the pieces and rebuilt the carb but it looks like I over powered it with fuel pressure, maybe 5.5~6 psi. The **** thing wouldn't keep an idle. i ahd to borrow a Edlebrock 1406 from Blinkinlights till I could get some time to swap in a new q-jet. I ended up at a local jobber store to get a rebuilt. I was given some info on what carb # I should go with, and it turned out good. I could have wanted some other accesories on it like the high idle plunger but I didn't research it myself. I pulled the carb out of the box put it on the engine ran the electric pump to fill it and check for leaks (at a more respectible pressure, 3.5~4psi) and fired her up, it idled high then low, a few sputters and a quick adjust of the curb idle and she was done. I took it for a drive home and was a little scared, the power difference from the 1406 to the q-jet was astonishing. I would reccomend the q-jet to all if you can do it.
All I would like is a listing of the carb specs, the # I got is on that little tag on the top of the carb. Does anyone know how to ID those things or have a list of them?

QJets have gotten a bad rap...mostly because they were crap in the early days, but now there are a lot of carb guys that can really make them work great. And they can really work well off-road.
I think I still have the rebuild sheet from a kit that lists the applications. Post up the carb number and I'll see if I can find a match.
edit: I've only rebuilt a couple qj's but found that if they had the funky plastic or whatever floats in them it's worth the extra $10-$15 to get metal replacements that actually float.

Joe,
I have a few #'s but I can't remember which one I rebuilt.
C9200
C9054
C9045
Hmmm...I don't think I can help you Woody. I don't recognize those numbers at all. :(
My carb was no. 1705 7233 or close to that. Started with 1705 anyway and I used a Borg-Warner rebuild kit no. 10474C.
Mines an original Rochester Qjet. Yours maybe an Edelbrock?

Q-Jet numbers are stamped on the rear driver's side of the carb. It should be 70xxxxx or 170xxxx something like that. It's right behind the linkage for the secondaries.
Yes, Q-Jets are pretty much the king of carbs. I would easily rate them up with the Holley truck avenger and the like. You have to know what you're doing to build one right, but once you get it tuned in nothing will ever touch it.

I have always been pleased with my Qjets except for one.
A few years back when I was researching a replacement and corrsponding #'s I came across some of the Old's materials, much of it was submitted by our own Dr. Bob (Bob Barry).
I'm at work and my search abilities suck but you may want to punch in some of that in various combinations, it was a pretty detailed listing.

There are 3 different series (4 if you count the Carter Q-jets...) that you need to be aware of. The older ones (pre-70 or so) are 70xxxxx numbers. The ones you want (most of the 70s and some early 80s) are 170xxxx numbers. The later computer controlled carbs are still 170s but have a bunch of sensors and solenoids on them. You want to avoid those.
Only other thing you need to really look at is the primary throttle shaft. Make sure there's as little play as possible in it. Otherwise it makes one fun vacuum leak.

There is a wonderful book on q-jets. If you are going to do the rebuild/tuning yourself you need to read it. They are not hard to do, but there are a lot of little tips that make things a LOT easier.
