It's not "hard core" (or Hardcore) until it wheels. It has come a long way since the green heep it used to be. Keep us updated, and post pics when it's done.

what was the reasoning behind running leaves in the rear and a 4-link up front?

edit: the dash looks killer btw.

Very sweet work!

Did starting with the Cherokee frame as a basis give you a substantial head-start over going with pure tube construction?

those shackles still scare the piss out of me but good work on everything. I like the cage work

learfxr
12-18-2006, 11:45 AM
That's a lot of tube work. Looks pretty cool.

welchct
12-18-2006, 01:22 PM
well starting with the frame was actualy a wast of time because I movbed the motor back a foot, redid every crossmember, bobed 14 inches off each end, and cut every factory bracket off. looking back it would have been much easier starting from scratch.

actualy the shackles are going byebye. the front is going to sit subtantualy lower than te rear so in order to get it to sit level I am going with some shorter shackles and taking the over load leaf out. if that does'nt work I am putting on some stock leafs.

the reason I did leafs ut back is cause I could not afford the 4 link when i started and that was one of the first things I did. and after doing it it flexed so well I desided to keep it, but went a head and linked the front.

what leaves are they?

edit: i reread the original post.

i see why you did what you did. Personally, i think you went about it backwards. One major advantage of a link system is reduction of axlewrap and increased throttle response. Do you plan on running some kind of axlewrap bar?

welchct
12-18-2006, 08:48 PM
Yes I have a axle wrap bar already built. And I know why a 4 link is better than leafs, but 1.5 years ago I was still in high shcool and 4 link would have taken to much of the budget. now that I have the money I dont have the time (its a toss up). I am moving to arkansas to go to school and dont have time for the buggy. That is why I have it listed for sale. I also bought a wrangler to wheel and drive for the next 8 years, so I dont have any thing to pull the buggy with.

Small world! Whats up man I met you at marshall creek a few years ago when your truck kinda looked like a wagoneer.(Grey Samurai and red Wagoneer). Anyways looks good! we went to 360 last weekend. Pretty nuts! Where are you off roading these days?

welchct
12-18-2006, 09:45 PM
Was that you at the top of the hill when I was in my wrangler? I am having a new rear end put in it right know (dana44!) I thought you looked fimilar if that was you. I was there sat. morning/after noon broke the rear end at 2:00 or 3:00

Desert Beast
01-16-2007, 12:12 AM
it looks good.
2 things though.

ford emblem? just wondering.

and how did you measure 4.5 feet of flex? seems like a lot.

welchct
01-16-2007, 01:29 AM
well I havent quite figgured out what to do with the emblem because it is made into the grill witch out of all the grills I have at the shop looks the best by far. the funny thing is there is not a single ford part on it.

and I measured from the ground to the bottom out side ebge of the tire. the 3 link works way better than I thought it would! oh and through all that fllex the D/S only need 2-3 inchs of traval.

rockjeep44
01-16-2007, 06:42 AM
Based on the fab work I've seen you do before I'm betting a dollar to a donut you didn't build that rig. However, if you did kudos. Thats the biggest 180 turnaround I've ever seen although I'm not crazy about some of the things you did it looks good overall.

I am wondering how long it will take to sell at $12K.

My personal opinion is that everyone wants something a little different in a buggy. 4-seater, 2-seater or 1-seater, wheelbase, color scheme, t-case, tranny, engine, triangulation, etc. You are also competing with so many buggy builders out there. Have you come to grips that you probably won't get $12K out of it?

Don't get me wrong, I like the buggy and all but I just think that building a buggy to sell isn't the best thing to do. Didn't warwagon sell (or try to sell) his buggy? How much did he get? How does it compare parts-wise?

Poley
01-16-2007, 09:40 AM
still pretty cool built... I like it but 12K is steap...

welchct
01-16-2007, 12:52 PM
I built it to keep but now that I am done I dont have any were to keep it. I am moving next week to arkansas to go to college (right next to superlift ohv) but am selling the tow rig and trailer so hoopfully I can sell it there. I know I wont get what it cost to build ($20000) but I figured for a I nce buggy ready to wheel that I can get atleast close to that. oh and I my end up throughing a FI 4.0 in it soon cause my comnchee jsut blew the trany and isnt worth fixing.

But till I get a nother buggy or rig I have my new to me 2000 Tj Sahara with a 4" lift NEW F'ing Dana 44 rear (blew the old rear end the day I got it) TeraLow 4:1, limted slip rear, all sorts of skids, ARB winch bumper, and custom rear swing out, with an XD900I too tide me over through college! and its paid for so I can spend car payment money on uprades.

Top of the hill? My truck is rhino lined off white now. Where you with the auto club- I mean all the new pretty Jeeps? Anyways I didnt realize you had a TJ. Anyways I personally hope you get what you are asking on your buggy because nothing is more depressing than throwing all your time and money into a project just to get shot down on the internet by people that do not have a 1/4 of the time invested in there projects. Now I am not tring to start a war because there a few nuts on here with more time and money than welch. Come on people cut him a break I dont know too many people`that were this far into this "sport" at this guys age. Good luck on the sale and in school and keep in touch!

welchct
01-16-2007, 07:01 PM
well the longer 3/4 wrench shifts the trany, and the 5/8 wrng farthest fromt the driver seat shifts the t-case.

welchct
01-19-2007, 05:36 PM
Well I may be keeping it for the next two years! I just scored a job a at skids off road and will be able to keep the buggy at Hot Springs, Super Lift OHV. So it will definately be getting used. for thoughs of you that are fermillier with the park or the area know that Skid owns the off road shop in town and has a small trail repar shop at the park, he also manages the park so I am set. I had to take a little pay cut but it is well worth it.

Well been a while sence I have posted and wanted to let ya'll know how its going. I have droped out of school (to work full time, running the **** shop) the TJ I rolled at a MOROC comp. But have sence rebuiltit. My comanch is in the middle of a resto-prerunner build, and the buggy is awaiting an ecm for the new 5.3 vortec that I'm about to swap in.

Too this date I have still yet to wheel the buggy. I finally got it done and went to bleed the hydro system and the motor blew in front of the shop! So because the insurance company sent me a fat check for my TJ I will be putting in a 5.3 vortec/4l60e combo out of an 02 avalanch. Right now I am waiting for my PCM to get back from being flashed and reprogramed. The company that does my harnesses and computers does awsome plug and play standalone systems. Plus with the emisions junck gone from the computer I shoud get 395-425 hp out of the motor depending how good the motor is but Im hoping for good #'s sence it only has 33K.

Too Desert Beast, rockjeep44, orangecherokee, and who ever else remember when I talked about opening my own shop, You were right this stuff is harder than I ever dreamed. The job itself is great and I love the freedome and benifits, but customers suck. I hardly get anything done cause the phone wont quit ringing and people stoping into window shop. To top it off the people that have rigs in the shop get mad because there rigs arent done. heck I dont even have to worry about running the books or other junk that would come with being the owner of a shop, and I'm stressed.

so you can sit back laugh and say "I told you so"

very lucky.

nothing like entering a rock race w/ a rig that has a stock cage (which are crappy) stock seatbelts, and no protecton for the driver.

looks like darwin missed agiain. oh well theres always next time.

welchct
08-04-2007, 12:12 PM
the funny part about it was that I had planed to build the cage the weekend before but ended up driving to texas instead. Oh well all is ok and the stock cage did better than I expected. Just the wind shild frame folded and the spreader bars came too. I had a helmet on and with out that I probably would have been hurt.

welchct
08-11-2007, 01:16 PM
because I was going to fast and could not control the jeep.

that is a 40 grade hill, and I was doing about 50 mph down it. and every time I hit the brakes I would start to slide side ways so I just rode it out.

it was an experiance I will not forget nor do I regret. Stuff happends and this was for the best.

that statement makes no sense in this thread. driving with a half-assed cage isn't something to look back on and decide if you feel regret. I still feel completely stupid about when I rolled my truck. I wish I had been smarter and built it right to begin with. I could have died that day and fortunately my wife was out of the vehicle.
