hello I have a 88 wag with tf727 and np229, I aquired a dana 300 that I would like to swap in. I know the dana 300 would bolt inplace of the np208 but will it directly bolt inplace of my 229? Do I have to get the tf727 to 208 adapter?

the bolt pattern is the same however your wag has a driver side drop transfer case and originally the dana 300 is for passenger side drop. the kit to flip the shifters over is like $550. It would probably be easier to get a 208 and put it in. The other option would be to get a passenger drop front axle, but I have heard of some issues from people on here about swapping to pass drop.

the d300 will indeed bolt in place of the 229. however, the way the holes are oriented on the adapter, you will have interferance between even the skinniest front driveshaft and the 727s big,fat pan on a stock ride height rig. youll need a minimum of 3" of suspension lift(and a longer bumpstop on that side ;) ) and/or to reclock the transfer case and lower the front output. you can buy an expensive clocking ring, relocate the studs on the d300,or drill some new holes in the adapter. you should be able to re drill 5 of the 6 holes on the adapter.5 should be enuff to keep it securely in place on the adapter.
this is how the IH used the d300 and d20 behind the 727 in the scout IIs. the adapter is longer, and the case is clocked with the front output fairly low(yes the scouts are a different bolt pattern). when the scout guys want to run a jeep 300 behind one of their 727s,they generally use a dodge 727 tailsahft(also 23 spline) and adapter, wich are longer the the jeep 727 parts,so you may look into that option as well.
i used to run a d300 behind a 904(handled the 258 just fine, it wasnt worth the effort to me to keep the 727). the 904 is the factory auto in 80+ d300 equipped CJs,and it worked just fine. i ran a 2" diameter front driveshaft and it tucked right up next to the tranny, even with no lift:

regardless of what tranny you use, youll need to rework the exhaust,as the d300 will sit in the same approximate location of your catalytic convertor
further d300 swap questions? :drivin:

Ya I have a spring over..good for about 5-6" of lift...I have to get cultom shafts too so I could get a narrow tubing shaft.
ps. I love the colors of the dana 300 and driveshaft in the photo!

Blake Shepherd went with a later xj front shaft as a direct bolt in to accomodate the springover. He said it fit perfect.
