Hey everyone i have a 1988 Jeep grand wagoneer with the Amc 360 engine and np 229 trans casxe. How do I find out what gearing it has? (I am assuming when you all talk about the gearing you mean the rear end?) anyway how would I find this out? what gearing does it most likely have?

if its stock, the rear end gears are 2.73:1. you can check this by pulling the diff cover and counting the teeth opn the ring gear, and dividing that # by the teeth on the pinion gear. it should be 41 on the ring gear and 15 on the pinion,. 41/15=2.73

Also if you have the factory towing package(ClassIII hitch, oil cooler) you will have a 3:31. if you want a quick way to check take a piece of string and tape it to the bottom of the rear driveshaft. Next mark one of the rear tires at 12:00. Now rotate the tire so it makes one revolution and then see how many times the string has wrapped itself around the driveshaft. Simple but will get you close .

you could try to find the tag located on the axle.

woddybeone: if you only turn one tire then the gearing i actualy cut in half because of the spider gears. Its best to jack up both rear tires, then turn the drive shaft with your hand, and count how many times the drive shaft turns until the tire makes 1 full turn.

Woodybeone, jack up the left tire and use that as your guide. It's connected DIRECTLY to the ring gear. If you only use the right tire, then the driveshaft might not turn at all, due to spider gear activity. Tranny in neutral of course.

Stuka, who told you that??

Lindel, I hate to disagree but the left axle is not connected to the ring gear, both axel shafts attach to the axel gears and spiders. The ring gear is on the left of the pinion though.

Well to make things even easier, look at the rear end near the cover, you'll see the ratio written on it. Mine said 2.72.
