View Full Version : Replacing GW "wood" with real WOOD ?

Any one thought of replacing the plastic "wood" trim and the vinyl "wood" sticker with real wood ? Ash and Maple maybe, like on the 49 Ford Woody Wagon ?

Just a thought

I suppose the problem is that the vinyl wood is around 0.015" thick, versus a piece of wood... But that would be cool smile.gif

yeah i know, but you could start with the trim, since they seem to be the hardest to restore/replace.

Maybe use a nice thin veneer for replacing the vinyl ??

It was just a thought.

I still havent decided if when I repaint my 84 GW if I will put the wood back on or not.

There are some guys out of Colorado Springs working on a wood veneer kit. OutbackJeep I think.

I think reall wood would look awesome but if you did any kind of 4wheeling I think the body flex would tear it off.

I'm planing on repainting my 82 wag and have been struggling with the wood issue. Restore or just leave it off? Well I have decided to get the paint job, find a real nice blue, and go without the wood. If I am very happy at that point I'll keep it bare and maybe put some sort of American Flag graphic on there. If I miss the wood, I'll have kept my wood trim and purchase a kit and have it restored. I have plenty of time to decide. The paint job is way down the list of things to do. Anyone know what a good quality paint job should cost?

if you go to real wood, be prepared for annual maintenance. i re-did my rusted out willys overland do brasil. 1/4s , doors and t/g. 1/4" ac plywood , stained walnut.edged in oak, spar varnished the whole thing every spring.

If you don't need major bodywork..or any body work..a "good" paintjob will cost you between 1-2K You could always do the painjob yourself and go to Maaco..They really do a fair job for the price and you could get it repainted every year.
Rita's body work and paint will come out to almost 5k by the time it's all said and done..but it will be better than new.

go with diamond plate. that would rock.
